Hi all you Hanks out there.
Have recently changed strings to D'Addario pure nickel 12s. Love the strings and the tone they produce. However, I am finding that there is a lot of string noise on slides, far more than I have experienced on other strings I have used, albeit of the same gauge. I would love to stick with these strings, but on a test recording the noise is very noticable. I am hoping that somebody out there in the great Hankworld can give me some advice on this topic, or if there is any sort of coating for the strings or whatever to help cure this. I do accept that it may partly be due to my technique (as a relatively new player), but I have not particularly been aware of this phenomenon previously with other strings.
Thanks guys.
Richard

Hiya. I've been using D'addarios for years. Can't say I've noticed any noise or that it's any worse than other strings. Have you tried flatwound strings? I'm sure D'addario make them. To be fair, it probably is down to playing technique, in part at least. Cheers, Julian

Possibly an application of Fast Fret or similar would help

Tone Finger-ease is another string lubricant. I am very sensitive to the feel of round-wound strings i.e. I don't like it - sets my teeth on edge . Back in the 1960's I used flat-wound Monopole strings. These days I use round-wound D'Addario nickel wound EXL110's (10-46) and the above said lubricant. I tried their ground half-round but they feel even worse to me.

Hi Richard,
It might be worth trying a set of Elixirs. The coating has a smoothing effect and I find they work well when playing slide-guitar.

Actually I quite like the noise of fingers / bottles on strings....I gives a unique-ness to the recording. If H had left it on one of their recordings all that time ago, you would all be trying to emulate it now! I would tell you not to worry about it and enjoy making the music...
Best,
Tony

Thanks for all your advice. Have also had a very helpful message from Don @ D'Addario. Will try string lube and lots and lots of practice, and hopefully things will improve. I can always fall beck on half rounds or flat wounds in case of need, but I love the tone of these strings so will persevere at the moment and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi I changed to half rounds they truly are a well kept secret. They sound real nice but dont make a noise at all. Daddario make them in various sizes. Another member here has also had great success with them. Cheers Ray NZ
