I've been called many things before and armhole is one of them... at least that's what it sounded like!

Pete, Don't apologise, I'm joking... it was actually in response to Frank's post. Whatever you put originally, I didn't see anything wrong with it. Cheers, Julian

Only other point I would make is where the trem springs are concerned there are at least two different 'pull strengths' I have read this before, but noticied when I got some with a new Wilkinson Trem for a strat build and they did not have the pull off some I had spare from my Vintage 57 reissue. I have only 3 in the W formation with 12s on on my 57 reissue but needed 4 in a straight line with 11s fitted on my new build.

Yes Roger, they do come in varying strengths and its advisable to keep them *matched*, if there IS one odd one, put it in the middle:

I changed my Am deluxe from black softer tension springs to the heavier silver springs. Outside of used silver springs which get softer tension and black springs that are made softer tension I didnt think there was different types. Having a heavy right hand I changed my new am deluxe to silver ones which appear to make up for my heavy hand through the trem arm which flattens the notes when Im playing. I have also kept the springs to three with parallel pattern on 10 and 11 gauge which I have on my strats, In my opinion I am sure I get a better tone with the siver heavier springs. But then again its just my opinion. Carl

Fender has definitely used weaker springs. All the weak ones I have seen were black but I have also seen stronger black ones. I bought a genuine Fender Vintage tremolo unit some years ago and that came with weak black strings. The ultimate example of not knowing your own heritage. Regards, Charlie

I wasn't aware there were differences until about a year or so ago when I ordered new springs to fit with a Callaham block, these were silver like the one's I was replacing, but much heavier.
At first I considered changing them, but with time they seem to have settled in or I may have just got used to them.
As I fitted them with block, I have no way of telling if they had any on influence tone/sustain?

Hi Gary, If you were to replace the springs with the originals then you would know, but from tests I have done, heavier springs give a much stronger tone, and in my opinion makes as much difference as going to heavier strings. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
Thank you, that makes perfect sense to me now, although I didn't realise it at the time and wasn't too happy about them being heavier.
With my generally using 10/46 strings this quite possibly worked to my advantage, more by chance than design. The problem with doing direct comparisons with lighter/heavier springs is that other settings and adjustments also change, combine this with a different rolled steel block and you can see how difficult it was to make a direct comparison.
Best regards
Gary

Hi Charlie After your extremely helpful pointer, I decided to look into this a little more, the following seems to fully support your personal findings. Interestingly, they seemingly indicate that there were stronger springs on the early strats: www.rawvintage.com/eng/item_springs.phpThe logic is based on these giving a more vintage tone! Best regards Gary

Hi Gary, I remember how strong the springs were on all of my 60s Strats. Regards, Charlie
