Hi Peter, I have the K7 harness fitted to my mexican strat.Iwanted to replace the original pickups for some Hank Marvin kinmans. The K7 harness gives you Hanks modern sound as well as the traditional strat sounds.Looking at the K5 harness its basically the same with less switching capability.I am really pleased with the difference it has made to the sound. The guy at the guitar shop that set my guitar up for me was really impressed with the tone.At the end of the day it depends what pickups you are replacing and what you want from your new pickups.I wanted the warmer tones of Hanks modern sound and was replacing very mediocre pickups, what i ended up with surpassed my expectations.I believe Hank has the K7 harness fitted to his modern strats.Chris Kinmans website is worth a browse.I had mine shipped to me from Australia but you can now buy them over here as you obviously know. Regards Dave.

Hiya. I'm not convinced that the actual wire in the guitar makes any difference whatsoever - there isn't a long enough run of it to really build up any resistance or capacitance, so as long as the joints are sound... I found out that the old man has been using a block connector between the wiring loom and the jack, so that he doesn't have to unsolder the jack to take the scratchplate off. I have no idea when he did this, but I haven't heard any difference. I'm all for these solderless systems, where you just plug the components in. Much neater and less risk of a dry joint, as long as the plugs were soldered on properly. Cheers, Julian

Hi Peter,
I fitted the K5 the first time I installed a set of Kinmans and I was pleased with the end result. Here's Kinman's own description.
The K5 harness is a basic harness without additional switching functionality. It costs less than the K7 and K9 but the quality has not been compromised for sake of price. Three improvements over stock factory wiring are a) the popular switchable Hi-Definition/Normal Tone controls and b) the bridge pickup is connected to the lower Tone pot while the middle Tone pot serves the middle and neck pickups. I did this because the bridge pickup, having the most treble, needs a Tone control to avoid excessive treble. Both Tone pots are No-load type. c) the volume pot has the famous Kinman treble bypass filter so you won't loose tone when you turn the volume down.
The "No Soldering" bit is because the leads from the pickups each have a two-pin connector that plugs into a connecting block on the harness. If your pickups don't have the two-pin connectors then they are available from Maplin. They don't need soldering --- they're just a squeeze fit.
Like all Kinman products it's well-made, compact and does exactly what it says.
If you have a choice I'd go for the K7.
Regards Dave
