First post,so be nice to this ol' duffer!
I last had an electric guitar back in the '60s,first tune that I ever learned to play was Wonderful Land. Guitar was a Burns, can't remember the model,my dad bought it for me from a musical instrument shop in the High St,Andover(my home town). After a while, couple years or so,motorcycles and women caught my eye! In the '80s,I got into the square neck(lap-style) Dobro, then,a bit later on, the Weissenborn after listening to David Lindley. I still play, and still enjoy playing the Wessie, but, for quite a while now,I've had this hankering! to get back into the electric.Problem is,all this electrickery and gadgetry has left me way back there in the dust! The only thing that I'm sure of,at the moment,is that the guitar will be a Burns, not the slightest interest in any other make,as far as the rest of it is concerned,I have no idea, other than that I'll need an amp,I'll need to somehow be able to play along to backing tracks. Echo machines? Mixers?Pedals? And what are these patches that I keep seeing mentioned, are they something like sticking plasters,or nicotine patches ;D As you've probably figured out by now,I'm a complete bonehead when it comes to all this electric mullarky.Well, not a complete bonehead, some bits are missing! Ted

Hi Ted,
Welcome to the site....I'll remember this post in 12 months when you're posting files recorded with one of your Strats and a combination of at least 3 echo units.... ;D ;D ;D
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Ted, A very warm welcome to Charlie's site, like you I was in the dark when trying to drag myself into the 21st century after a long lapse in playing, but with the help and advice received from this very friendly and knowledgeable site I am now playing (when arthritis permits) quite a few Shadows numbers. Could I suggest that you just browse through the various topics which will give you all the information you need, and if you can't find it just ask. Best regards, Maurice.

Hi Ted
the fact that you are here is an excellent start. you already have a PC and that will play your backing tracks. You might want to consider an amp sim rather than an amp, especially if it is going to be for home use. They are very versatile and of course mimic more than one amp. As far as echos go you couldnt really have come to a better place. The choice of units is wide and suits pretty much every budget. Some units double up as both echo and amp sim AND can be used to connect to your PC. obviously i have no idea of your budget but, if you are going with a burns, a Burns marquee would be a good choice for a relatively small outlay while most of the higher end Burns models will get you very close to the Shads sound if indeed that is what you are looking for. Welcome aboard, look forward to hearing something from you in the not too distant future
regards Ian

Hello Ted, Welcome to the mad house whatever you want to know , dont be afraid to ask from the simplest thing to the most technical, someone here will know the answer, or know someone who does: Starting with your patches question: Different songs require differing echo patterns , take for instance a simple G2 effects pedal, if fitted with EFTP ie: Charlie Halls patches, you would choose A0 for Apache, A1 for stranger etc etc, ensuring that you have the correct echo pattern for that song: All that info comes with the patches from Charlie: Do as Maurice suggests and have a good browse and dont be afraid to ask: welcome again, Frank:

Ted: Please excuse Pete, but the poor guy is from Cheltenham so its not really his fault I am sure he behaves quite differently if he is taken North of Watford Gap, in fact I heard a rumour that if taken as far North as Sheffield he can be trusted to go to the Cinema ( afternoons only) with just two carers : Concerned , Frank :

Thanks to all for the very warm welcome. I've been looking around the site,I think my head is just about to explode! I'll be getting a Burns Marquee, greenburst. I think a used 20w amp will suit my needs, possibly a Vox valvetronic,or maybe a Beringer.Any thoughts on these? They seem cheap enough, and I like cheap! As far as echo units are concerned,I need time to digest it all,my brain hurts. Think I'll go for a ride! Once again, thanks for the welcome.I think I'm going to like it here.
Ted

Hi Ted, Great to welcome you on board. You'll get all the help you need here. The members are great. I'm slow on a lot of stuff myself and was so grateful to everyone for helping me a long.
Always someone to help you. But you are right in browsing through threads. There is a wealth of info. Look forward to hearing some of your recordings.
Cheers,
Johnny ;D

Hi Ted : I use a Behringer Vampire amp and it is a very good amp indeed, maybe a bit too big for just home use , its 120 watts and about the size and weight of an AC30 however a friend has the 15 watt version and it is excellent, great tone , bags of volume and not too big or heavy, and lastly - cheap: The Vox VT's I understand are also excellent amps particularly for the Shadows sounds, lots of members use them so no doubt they will comment in the fullness of time: SEE , I CAN be sensible: lalalalala lalalala: Cheers, Frank:

Hi Ted
I also hail from Dorset but retired out to the warmer climes of Cyprus just over 5 years ago. It was around this time that I found Charlie's site and rekindled my interest in trying to sound like Hank (some hope!!) after a break of about 40+ years.
It looks as though you're sorted with the guitar and amp but would suggest that if you decide to buy an "echo box" go for something reasonably cheap (Zoom G2 range is good) as Charlie will (hopefully) being bring out his own box later this year.
Being a bedroom player I couldn't justify buying a genuine Strat so I bought a Vintage Reissued V6 Strat copy which I'm very happy with and which also has Wilkinson hardware so no problems with floppy trem arms. My amp is a Fender Mustang 1 and I've got a Zoom G2 with Charlie's patches. I'd never dream of playing in public but I have put together a CD which a few privileged ;D ;D ;D friends and relatives have. (It must have taken me at least 20 takes for each track to get them sounding anywhere near decent).
Which part of Dorset are you, we used to live between Poole and Wimborne on Canford Heath?

Hi Ted Just as a generalization there are a variety of effect units that charlie can supply his EFTP patches for. Somewhere on this site there is a list of what the charges are plus how he rates them.I think its under EFTP purchasing heading. My personal preference is the Zoom G2.1nu which i use with a Vox vt20 but Ted everyone to there own its all about the sound GOOD LUCK to you what ever you decide on. (I to can be sensible when I try) ;D ;D ;D Regards Pete
