Hi Rob, I think you played it practically identically. The sound is very well matched, except that yours seems to have a clearer high end. Maybe a lower treble setting would have been more exact. Regards, Charlie

Jay, the fact you can't hear who is who is a great compliment thanks... Charlie thank you for your kind words on my sound..... Hanks sound is a little more distorted in the high end,a byproduct of his Meazzi I guess? Did I use the proper Q2 setting?
Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob, If you used 0-02 then it was probably the best one to use. I have emailed you a modified version of the file, with details of what I did to the EQ of your part. See what you think. Regards, Charlie

Charlie, I still try to clime up my chair again, after falling down on the floor listening to your modulated version of my happyb file.... Holy &^%$#@ what a sound!!!!!!!! I listen to it multiple times and my goosebumps don't go away still.... This is the best I ever heard....thanks to your magic. Come to think of it,I only wanted to established that it wasn't a Gretsch..... not to copy that sound of the original recording...but you nail it ;D If you do the same with my large Apache file, I'll need a nurse!! Pity Roberto isn't still around to hear this sound.... Well there is one person using a ESE Charlie any objection, me using this modified file?? Thanks a million you sound-wizard you Regards Rob

Gary thanks for the nice words..... Charlie didn't made a special Q2/Q20 setting for me or for this number. He enhanced/altered my EQ settings on my recording with a special tool,to matched it more to wards Hanks sound.
If Charlie doesn't mind I place the new version on my 4shared account, so you all can listen to that and judge it....

Hi Rob, Please post the new version. It is an mp3 but for this purpose I don't think it lost anythjing important. Did you user the cut control of the amp on your recording? If not, then setting it for less high end would take care of the right hand part of the curve, maybe you could even add some treble if you remove enough highs with the cut, you would have to experiment. I am not sure why the mid boosts that I added were already present on Hank's part. The curves between your sound and Hank's sound looked very different before I altered anything, but I also had to consider the other instruments. It might be partly to do with the difference of the guitars, I should think Hank played a rosewood board Strat and I have heard many of those with a more mellow tone that might already be closer to the curves I set. Hi Gary, The new programs have more echo warmth and I think closer to the real Echomatic 2 but the EQ change was to the whole sound of Rob's part including the guitar tone without echo. I don't know which patch Rob used, maybe 0-02 or 0-05 or even 0-06 (these would be 0-12, 0-15, and 0-16 with the new programs as they are in a different order), perhaps he will tell us? Regards, Charlie

Charlie thanks for your comments and pointers on my work. To be honest I can't recollect :'(the exact settings on my AC30...because this recording was done a few years ago! I know that I used the middle input because they are customized to be the same as the pre top boost version.....same capacitors etc Q2 setting...can't recollect for sure, has to be 0-01 or 0-02 I reckon. Well if Hank did used a rosewood neck strat...luckly I have two original 1960 slab-boards one in f red and one d blue...both sounding very different....must be the color ;D Anyway here's the link with Charlie's magic work done on my Eq www.4shared.com/file/104453706/9a394178/happybirthday21mod.htmlHope you all like it and give some comments. Thanks and groetjes Rob

Hi Rob..There is a noticeable difference on the soundfile..You re so close to the Holy grail....I wonder if a ts9 (ibanez) somewhere in the chain would provide the missing link..Charlie might know something there..Funny enough this was the first song i tried when i got eftp a few weeks back in the q2 and i just smiled..until the wife asked me if it was someones birthday along with a few unprintable remarks......cheers Gary

Hi Gary, The TS9 would remove bass and high end to accentuate the mids, but I think it might be too much, could be worth trying if you already have one as long as you don't set it for too much gain and/or overdrive the amp input. Regards, Charlie

Gary a TS9 never thought of it,I only know those for distortion sound etc.... Holy grail errr missing link will ever be Hank,I'm glad I just can keep the guitar leveled nothing more! Charlie only switching to a slapboard strat isn't enough? Do I need more gizmo's Hank's sound on the right channel has more mid,but isn't the rest of the shads and the famous Abbey Road reverb-room also a nice piece of the cake, which gave the sound more color...my humble guitar is just "naked" on one track..... Groetjes Rob

Hi Rob, Hank never used more than the guitar, the echo and the amp as far as I know. I suppose it is down to finding the magic combinations for each track. The studio would have had EQ which was probably used. Maybe also some compression. The reverb is not always necessary. The out take versions of Wonderful Land have no reverb and they sound magnificent. Regards, Charlie

Is there anyone else who cannot hear any difference in the modified version? One's as good as the other.......
Rob, any plans to record another toon?
Jay.
