Hi Pete
I think you will find the Shadows did the the original commercial recording in 1960, this was a hit in the UK, but Jorgen Ingmann had a hit with this version in the American Market about a year later. It was also covered by the Ventures, which again I believe was another year on after that.

Hi Pete, Nice but I can't believe people would buy this version after hearing Hank's, just goes to show there is no accounting for taste? Regards, Mel

Apache was first recorded in may 1960 by Bert Weedon, but wasn't released, this is why Jerry Lordan proposed it to the Shadows. Bert Weedon's version was relased only after it was a huge hit by the Shadows. When you listen to it, you understand why it wasn't immediatly released !

Jørgen Ingmann is a danish guitarist - I guess he is best known for the 1963 winner of European Song Contest. Dansevise www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYyhJvRE3mQ. In the 40's and 50's he played a lot of jazz and swing music. I have never seen him play anything else but Gibson guitars. I have found a link to a song (is it a song when it is instrumental?) showing his skills and his special sound. Well quite influenced by Mr les Paul --- www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4DA5Wv8ZjMSKCee Denmark

Hi Didier
That was why I was careful to say commercial recording, which of course the Shadows version was!
Best regards

Hi all, yes that was released after the Shad's. Late 60 or early61. Didier, Bert Weedon did release his in I think 59. I had a copy.Jerry lordens recording of Apache is quite a bit like Bert's I don't know who released first, I would guess Jerry as he was less than pleased at Bert's attempt. This is my feeble recolection of it, I was just an only just teenager. I was in to Cliff and the Drifters at the time. Bob.

Thank You Gary,Mel,Didier,Skcee,&Bob For your reply's very interesting. So IMO The Shadows recording of "Apache" is way above all the others. The arrangement the playing and the recording was just amazing. What is posted on YT is misleading in what it say's about it. Thanks all once again for taking the time to maybe put things in prospective. Regards Pete

Hi all,
This is very interesting. I didn't even know Jerry Lordan had recorded Apache! I am always interested in originals, presumably that is what Jerry intended it to sound like.
I see that 'All my own work' by Jerry Lordan has been re-released, I think I'll buy it.

This really was an iconic number and The Shadows version was the very first record I bought to play on my then new Dansette record player! I'm also surprised that few people seem to know there was a vocal version by Sonny James, who was better known for his Country Music at the time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1edBNa3I00sGary

Thanks for that. I like Jerry's original and to me The Shadows' version has a very similar feel or to put it another way evokes the same images in me. For a long time I've felt that The Shadows' Apache portrays an image at odds with the image of Apaches in all those old cowboy vs Indian films. I haven't seen the film that inspired Jerry Lordan so I don't know how Apaches are portrayed in it. Bill

There was also a version with french lyrics sung with an italian accent by "Orlando" (Brother of "Dalida" who was a big star in France): No sure it's the best version ! Didier

Hi all, This is very interesting. I didn't even know Jerry Lordan had recorded Apache! I am always interested in originals, presumably that is what Jerry intended it to sound like. .......... Bill There seems to be differing opinions whether it's actually Jerry Lordan's recording (ie himself playing the guitar). A few comments from youtube: - Though from Lordan's LP, in fact the tune is played by the Johnnie Spence Orchestra. - Jerry was the composer, not the guitar player ! Anybody know for sure? Erik

I thought I had read that Jerry Lordan's version was played on a ukelele or something similar. I don't remember if it was recorded as a demo or released.

Hi Didier
You certainly got me on that one, never heard that before!
I certainly agree with your comments LOL
Hi skcee
Tommy Seebach was the 70s disco version, it was a sad sad story as he died quite young at around 54 years old.

I thought I had read that Jerry Lordan's version was played on a ukelele or something similar. I don't remember if it was recorded as a demo or released. Hi Charlie, Wikipedia says Jerry Lordan played it to The Shadows on a ukulele and The Shadows subsequently recorded it. However, there are statements on the wiki that differ from what members here have said so i don't know how accurate the wiki is. Bill

author=" Charlie Hall" I thought I had read that Jerry Lordan's version was played on a ukelele or something similar. I don't remember if it was recorded as a demo or released. Charlie You are Spot on he did play it on his ukelele when the shadows heard it he was on tour with them I read he played it to Jet Harris. It would be very interesting to see if there is any recording of it anywhere or any one else who as played it on a ukelele. Pete PS Sorry Bill we must have both been thinking the same

Hi All, Another little piece of info. I heard or read somewhere Hank mentioning that he came up with the intro to Apache (the bend section). So, presumably any recording with that in it must have been done after The Shadows' version was released. regards George

I like this version because of the dancing girls. The Shadows should have done the same and have some dancing girls when on stage ! Didier

I like Seebach's effects best. I'll try to convince the band to incorporate something similar when we do a show. Then no one will notice when I flub the gallop as usual.
