Before advent of the fuzz box, it was a common practice to slit amp speakers with a razor blade to get the distorted sound.

HI Phil, When I started playing, I made a promise to my dad to finish my apprenticeship before going abroad, The group went abroad for 18 months and I worked part time as a Green Coat/ bouncer at The Top Rank, So was back stage mixing in with all the top bands, Their equipment was in a shocking state but still delivered good sounds. Then in 67 after I got my papers .We started the European music tours. Nice to look back. Regards Carl

I seem to have read somtime ago that this method of distortion was used by early black blues guitarists, no doubt someone dropped an amp sometime and discovered they liked to new sound from a damaged amp.

Carl, sounds like you knew the band I don't know how long you've lived in Preston but I once had a girlfriend there, Christine Grimoldby, she lived in a tall block of flats, if I remember, No 7, Severn House? She and her friends used to follow the band around the north, at that time it was Lee Wade and the Wild Ones, later to become just The Wild Ones, we played everywhere Bury Palais, Bolton, Burnley, Room at the top Wigan, I could ramble on, and on, and... Yes I was born and raised in Preston, I remember Bruce and the Spiders and that Irish band Wheels. Did you guys play in the "Victoria Pub "Friday nights, local band down stairs and visiting band up stairs. Severn House was in Samuel street my first wife was from that area I was born across New hall Lane in Bootle Street, then we moved down New Hall Lane Five Houses from Eddie Calverts parents. I am surprised we didn't cross paths but when your playing you don't see many other groups. Didn't think I could remember that far back. Carl

If you follow the links in Manchester Beat you will see that, Peter Halliwell (drummer) and Stuart MacGarry (rhythm) from the Spiders, joined The Wild Ones. Eric Wrixham who was once a keyboard player for the Wheels at one time also joined. Herbie Armstrong their guitarist was on the X factor a year or so ago. I also joined the Rockin Vickers for a couple of gigs.
I have played many times in the Vic and nearly all the pubs and clubs in Blackpool.
When Eddie Calvert played a summer season in Blackpool he stayed four doors down from where I was staying.
Small world.

During the sixties and seventies most of the musicians moved around a lot with different groups longest I stayed with a group was about two years before moving on, Then the last group I played in was ten years, before I stopped playing mid eighties. In them days we played round Accrington and Burnley mostly Did not meet any of the guys you mentioned but heard of them, when your playing you don't get out to see other groups. do you still play or have you finish traveling. Regards Carl

After the 60's I went on to heavy rock, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep etc. Now you are talking Phil, I loved Uriah Heep as soon as I heard their Look At Yourself album at a party. Great music with wonderful vocal harmonies. I know you don't do vocals and I can't really imagine a lot of their stuff as a pure instrumental but I would love to hear what you could come up with doing some of their stuff, as you do the other stuff so well
