Hello, Perhaps someone could advise me on this, particularly Charlie. I've had the EFTP from Charlie loaded into my Zoom G2Nu pedal for a while now but still can't seem to get anything like a good Shads sound. I have a Strat with Kinman pups, the G2Nu and a fender Mustang amp, so I should I hope be able to get a good sound but I'm not. I think that the problem might be with the Zoom. As well as downloading EFTP from Charlie, is there anything on the Zoom that should be Off or On that might be affecting my sound. I heard a member the other day using a Mexican Strat with the Zoom pedal and his sound was as good as I could possibly wish for. What am I doing wrong. Thanks, Derek B.

Maybe you should try plugging into a Vox AC15 or 30 and see if you are closer? I can't get to Hanks's early sound with a Fendet amp.

Two things there that set the alarm bells ringing, firstly the Mustang amp. I have a mate who brought his around for me to sort out and get a good Shadows sound and believe me I tried and tried but couldn't get it anywhere near satisfactory. Plugged into my Vox Valvetronix AVT30 and got it in no time. I think the problem was that it was too bright on whatever setting you chose and it was difficult to lose the horrible tinny tone, no matter what you did with the tone controls, maybe it's the speakers, who knows ? The other thing that bothers me are the Kinman pickups. I had some years ago and had trouble getting the old sound to no avail. Went back to normal pickups and it was there in an instant. The clues are all there if you listen to Hank using Kinman pickups - he doesn't get the old sound either, he told me on the 2004 tour that he wasn't bothered about it. Strange that on the 2009 Cliff & Shads tour he'd got Fender Custom Shop 54's on all his guitars. With the Kinmaans, t was all a money making endorsement, nothing more and loads of us fell for it. I've heard the Zoom used by others and it sounds good.

Mustangs have too many gimmicks for my liking not really needed with the g2, also the g2 settings have some amp modellings that may be on and working against the mustang, where abouts are you located? Try the zoom through headphones only without the amp and see what it sounds like then

I used a Fender Twin Reverb reissue as the test amp when I wrote the G2Nu patches. Maybe the Fender Twin Reverb model in the Mustang will work, but keep the treble setting very low, and any bright switch off if there is one. Regards, Charlie

Aren't the Zoom G2 patches using amp emulation ? If yes, this should be turned off when using a guitar amp. With a Fender Mustang, I guess that the "Brititsh 60's" amp emulation should be used. True, if you fit Kinmnan FVs you are going to struggle with the 1961-63 sound, but CVs and the new Impersonators will do it. Ian

It isn't twaddle at all. I had the CV set and they lacked character, if they were any good why the need for the 'Impersonator' set and why has Hank switched back to Fender. At the time of the 2004 tour I discussed this with Hank and he was aware that folks found his sound disappointing, but he admitted that he was happy with a 'ball park sound' and preferred the noiseless option at the time. The lack of the original sound was blamed on the KCP amp by some, but it was the pickups. Recently someone in my band was using some of my Tonerider alnico vintage pickups on his Strat and it was a sound to die for. When he gave me the pickups back and refitted his Kinmans, the sound disappeared overnight . The new 'impersonators' may be OK, I have yet to hear them live, but the early ones didn't give anything like an authentic vintage tone. OK it's an opinion, but hundreds of others have ditched them and gone back to the original kit.

Don't read too much into that Steve, there were too many thousands of pounds a stake not to release it. The sound for the 2009 was improved by comparison, but I agree with what you are saying, trouble is he's beyond criticism to some.
Getting back to the problem in this thread, I think there maybe issues with something in the Zoom clashing with the hard sound of the Mustang amp, but I was only speaking from experience, having now nailed the sound using normal kit.

Ian Hank's 2004/5 sound was a "modern" Shadows' sound, not a vintage one. Kinman "Marvin" model PUs were only intended for his modern sound, not the vintage one. If you want vintage sound and need noiseless PUs, Kinman 54' Impersonators should do the job. If you don't need noiseless PUs, Fender CS54 work fine. Didier

Hello, Thanks to all those you replied with help and advice regarding my Shads sound. I'm not convinced that the kinman pups are the problem despite "blackstrat"s insistence, and the Mustang amp has some superb amp models in it which are very difficult to differentiate from the real valve amp. I'll try "TonyL" s suggestion with the settings he has on his Mustang amp and see how we go. Regards, Derek B

Hi Derek I have a Zoom G2.1Nu and only the standard pickups on both Strats. I am very happy with the unit but mainly practise through a little Roland Micro Cube and find it's trickier to get the "right" sound with that amp as it doesn't have EQ settings and the tone seems to change quite a lot when balancing volume/gain settings even a little. However through the VOX AC-15 it always sounds great whatever settings I select. One day I must learn how to turn off the Zoom amp emulation when using the Micro Cube as Didier suggested and see if that makes any difference.
Sometimes though I wonder about my perception of the sound through the Micro Cube as even in the same practice session a different volume of the backing tracks or where I'm standing in the room seems to change how it sounds to myself. When I've sometimes recorded a practice session with a web cam with either the VOX or Micro Cube the guitar tone on the recording always sounds better than the tone I hear when playing. It's really strange how differently I can hear the sound from day to day too even when no settings have changed.
Best wishes Rosemary
