I am a great fan of the British Eagles and play several of the numbers on their 1960's album. From the cover of that album they obviously use Fender Strats and Vox amps. Does anyone know what echo unit they used and also how they achieved that unique sound they have? Are any of the band members still active in the guitar world? Cheers from Australia. Adrian

The lead guitarist, Terry Clarke died in 2008 but I think John Payne, the rhythm guitarist is still with us. Don't know if he still plays. Ian

There's at least four of their recordings on iTunes.
Rod Meacham died in 2002.

Thanks for your replies but no one has answered my question - what echo unit did the Eagles use - perhaps a Watkins Copicat? Sheendigs - coincidence that you mentioned Josef Wagner and his marches. Below is a link to my son Bryan playing "Under The Double Eagle" on a Strat. (Fiesta Red of course soundcloud.com/bryanbrowneau/under-the-double-eagle-demoCheers from Australia Adrian

In the early 60's I played with my first band at a very large dance hall in Bristol, i'm pretty sure the other band was the Eagles. We had cheap gear, Watkins Rapier, Dominator doubleing as a PA! etc. etc. They had Fender guitars, Vox amps/PA, but I can't remember what echo unit they had, I would guess probably a Copycat as just about everyone did in the early days, but they might have changed it by the time they were recording. Great stuff by Bryan by the way Phil

Well I remember seeing them perform at the Gala Ballroom in Norwich around 1961/62 and they were all playing(and I think, occasionally singing)through a Meazzi Factotum although perhaps the bass guitarist had a separate amp - can't recall as my eyes were glued on the strats.I remember this mainly because I was in a schoolboy band at the time who were half decent with cheapo guitars through Linear and RSC 30w amps plus on occasion a Dallas Scala and an Elpico (all of 5 watts.) Disillusioned, our version of Hank was also present and after this gig wanted us to purchase a Meazzi Factotum on HP but my dad refused to underwrite me! A musical career then paused for many years.

Hi Ted I normally play through Meazzis, both valve and solid state, as well as 1964 Strats and a Vox AC30 hand-wired amp. I still cannot get close to that Eagles sound. Something's missing !!!

Alisap - good spotting! I had a look on YouTube at the cover of their vinyl album and you are right. The picture wasn't distinct but the white guitar is not a Fender. Also did you notice that the guitarist with the white guitar is using a thumbpick which would be very unusual for a rhythm guitarist. Perhaps that explains why I can't the lead guitar sound on a Strat! Does anyone know if the lead guitarist is the one playing the Vox guitar and if so, what model Vox guitar is it?
Regards from DownUnder
Adrian

Which picture are you referring to as the one on YouTube "Smash hits" The Eagles" has Fender guitars, with two white Strats?

They were playing white strats when I saw them in Norwich. I don't remember the lead player using a thumb pick but it is possible. I was already aware of Chet Atkins so I think I might have noticed. Whilst they interpreted a lot of material in their own way and were a slick act, they had clearly modelled themselves on the Shadows who were the big stars at the time, and I don't think The Eagles ever made it to the big time.
With regard to the album covers, don't forget these were often studio produced with whatever gear was to hand - viz Bruce's Tele with the price tag attached on the first Shads album.

Hi Stratman, I sympathise with your frustrations on getting "the sound". Two observations: Hank will sound more like Hank on a clapped out Rosetti Solid Seven than me trying to emulate him on the finest custom shop strat. Also do not forget the very considerable art of studio mixing which significantly polishes the recorded sound - Hank has commented on this in the past.

The band members posing on this cover have Vox and Fender brand guitars as I have stated earlier. Two white finish Vox guitars and one fiesta red Fender. Phil, I`m very confident about it. Cheers, alisap

Hi Sheendigs Yes, that is the photo on the album I own. The white guitar is definitely not a Strat. Different headstock and different controls. I looked on the well known auction site but could not find a similar guitar for sale. Also, do you think the guitarist with the white guitar uses a thumbpick? Cheers Adrian

Adrian, I had a look through my books and this is the guitar, it has the three switches and the logo above them, also the jack socket below the knobs, you can just see the bottom of the tremolo unit on the Eagles picture. The guitar they are pictured with is an earlier version of this as it hasn't got the string restraints on the headstock. As for that sound, I could only find Sukiyaki on itunes, but it shouldn't be a problem to create it with a Strat, a lot of it is to do with tremolo technique. Phil

The white finish Vox branded guitar with black plastic tip trem arm is most likely a Soundcaster www.vintageguitarandbass.com/vox/Soundcaster.php Guitarist with thumbpick is playing a guitar with blank pickup covers, features found in the Vox Clubman model. Regards, alisap.
