Hi all,i am also after a remedy .I very foolishly cut the very tip of my finger tip off on my index finger cutting vegetables(fretting hand).Anyone know of anything to speed up the healing process.Without trying to put anyone off they're evening dinner, its not a massive chunk, just a couple mm.letting the air get at it to heal quicker seems the sensible thing at the mo. Tried rehearsing last night...and i cant play very well at all..let alone any instrumentals. I have the rubber thimbles...and finger condoms ready for the weekend,as I'm sure the weekend audience wont be very impressed if it starts bleeding everywhere . Many thanks....Steve

Did you try putting the cut bit back on immediately and then bind it on with a plaster. I did a similar injury starting a model air plane engine, My mum stuck the bit back straight away and it eventually grew back on.

Hi Steve, I am very sorry to hear this, but did you see a doctor or go to hospital? Surely you need expert help with such an injury. I do not think I would be thinking about playing so soon afterwards if it happened to me. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie..i did go to the A&E dept..until they said it was a four and three quarter of an hour wait. I hit the out of hours pharmacy and went out the back so he could examine it. I'm aware he wasn't a doctor, but he said it would heal fine with what he prescribed, making sure no infection would happen. In all fairness it is healing very quick due to not covering it up(apart from sun eve when it happened). Tho playing Fri sat and Sunday could be a serious issue Cheers......Steve

Hi Steve, Glad a professional looked at it and helped you. Which finger is it? I remember a very long time ago (late 60s) cutting the tip of my first finger (not like yours, just a cut) and having to play with the remaining 3 fingers. For example, where I would normally play E with my first finger on the 1st fret of the G string and bridge the second fret D and A strings with my second finger, I used my second finger on the G string and and the third and fourth fingers on the D and A strings instead. I don't remember much about how I coped with lead playing but I managed to do the gig without using my first finger at all (I automatically did not use it as it was too painful), and I don't have any momory about how bad it might have sounded. Certainly there have been worse gigs as far as my playing was concerned, with no injury at all. Unless you think you might be able to adapt in a similar way, I don't think I would do the gig if I were you, but you might have a situation where you can afford to wait until nearer the time and decide then. Regards, Charlie

Yes that's what I'm doing at mo Charlie.... re-arranging my chord work.Barre chords don't seem to bad.Its my index finger, so basic c,am etc are out of the question. The thought of sliding up the neck on any lead work at the mo doesn't bear thinking about. Ill definitely be choosing the set list for sure. Cheers.....Steve

Steve, About 18 months ago due to a medical condition my fingers all cracked open and I could'nt play. With a gig looming I had to do something, do what I did and go to the chemist and get a little bottle of 'Germolene New Skin' (it cost about £4.00) its a liquid with a little brush in the bottle you just paint it on your wound and let it dry and like it says, it feels and looks like new skin and seals the wound. When the first application is dry - it only takes a couple of minutes to dry - then apply another. It stings a little when first applied but it will really help you to play. I highly reccomend it for sore or cracked fingers.

Hi Steve, I cut my finger once while doing onions and had a gig that night. A couple of coats of superglue should do the trick. It will probably peel by your break so pick it off and stick on another couple of coats. It means you will be able to use the finger and not feel pain.
Once I hit my third finger with a hammer at work. It wasn't easy playing that night as I couldn't use the finger. Every now and then it would try to do what it was used to and I believe it healed quicker as I was playing most nights at that time.
Regards, Jim.

not recommending this but i have been told some pro players have put super glue on the tips of fingers when there fingers felt sore or had paper cuts (very fine cuts) on the tips. peter

Baz..someone mentioned this to me last night also.i like the sound of it,and think ill check this out.appreciate the tip.many thanks...Steve
Jim/Peter ,it seems the super glue method is very common with guitarists with cut fingers. The average person tries to avoid superglue on they're fingers, and in guitar land hundreds of people are gluing they're cuts shut lol.I can see why they would do it. I suppose you have to be someone like a musician etc,to really appreciate how desperate and frustrating this can be.Many thanks Steve

I cut the top off my little finger on my left hand with a bread knife some years ago., Although the hospital were able to re-attach it, I have no feeling in the end of it at all, so it is useless to use when playing the guitar. Not really a problem as I have learnt to adapt.
It made an awful mess of my sandwich as well....

Hi again Steve, The aerosol spray is the same stuff as in the bottle that I mentioned, its just that the with the brush on one you get more for your money and its easier to apply just where you need it!
Let us know how you get on.

Steve, my son did the same thing last week, he took a chunk out of the side of his finger, all the skin, about 3/8" in diameter, now there's skin grown back, you might need to wait sometime though to put it onto strings!

Jimbo..you have adapted very well judging by your sound files Ive listened too.Tho unfortunately,i wont be employing you as head of catering on our next world tour of Devon & Cornwall OK . All the best...Steve. Baz..Yes thanks for the info..and will let you know how good it is over the weekend.Cheers... Steve Phil..luckily the cut is slightly to the side, and not directly square on the tip..thus why i may get away with chord re-arrangement. I hope your son recovers fully.Cheers....Steve

Hi all..just a quickie to say i got through the show okay.Sprayed about seven layers of the plastic skin/aerosol plaster on,and it helped. It was flapping about a bit not long into the set.(plastic skin that is)I did play Apache, but avoided other faster tempo instrumentals like stupid cupid, wipe out etc..and solos from come up and see me etc. In all fairness, the best thing i think i did was to leave it exposed to the air all week,So good luck to anybody who hopefully doesn't find they're self in the same boat as me.Thanks to all the tips, and concerned members.ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS THIS FORUM IS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE OTHERS. Many thanks...Steve

Hi Steve........glad to hear your gig went well too.............I think your problem was a lot more worrying than mine as I have two other band members who were able to take the strain by substituting some of their other songs in place of some of mine........... a great improvement some would say Baz

Thankyou Maurice,I know too well how seemingly small injuries can disable us Guitarists.I used to suffer splits on the side of various fingers,i dont get them now,but those splits used to make my few hair roots tingle ! luckily i still have slender fingers,im sure my ole ring will still fit.Best wishes, Rick.
