Attention experienced Giggers!
Although I've played in bands over the years as a Rhythm guitarist, I haven't yet played a Shads gig I have been given the opportunity to play some Shadows numbers at a small "Live Night" here. I will play along with BT's. I would appreciate any suggestions regarding a set list - say ten numbers. Which do you think might be the most popular numbers? What is a good mix of slower and more uptempo numbers? I think here in Japan The Ventures were always more popular than The Shadows so it's possible that the small audience won't really know what were Shads hits, or which numbers were popular. I think the set list might be for my own enjoyment!! There will be another band playing Ventures numbers, so I won't for example be playing Walk Don't Run! Thinking about it - any other advice re playing live with BT's would also be most welcome. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Regards Dave

You don't say which Shad's numbers you play - can you give us a list from which to choose?
On a general basis, go to the gig with your tracks set up, ready to play, in order, avoiding messing around and delays between numbers. For a short gig, like this one, I would include additional tracks, that can be swapped in, allowing for a little flexibility (I will often modify my planned set once I see how the audience reacts to certain numbers).
One warning, Dave. Do this once and you will want to do it again... and again... The time will fly by and you won't want to stop!
Enjoy!
Noel

Hi Dave,
Although "Riders in the sky" is not an original Shadows tune, but so many folks love and know it from different bands or singers that I think, in case of an audience for whom the Shadows tunes are new, this tune could be a nice ice breaker, an "appetizer" for wanting more or a smooth transition into the world of Shadows tunes. Especially with the BT that starts with the Apache intro. But it should be followed by another fast paced tune before playing a slow one.

Hello Dave,
Same as you I invariably play live with a band, however quite some years ago I did spot at a musical evening event, about half an hour or so with BT's. I had the tunes recorded on a CD with a Walkman type CD player. The echo was a one type fits all in a "Rockman" type of unit with AC30 tone, before I knew anything about EFTP. If you have an EFTP unit or better still one of the new HCSE's then you will have the advantage of not only having a much better sound but you will be able to save the echo's you need in the same order as the set list - so it is just one click up and you are ready for the next tune.
I dug out the CD and the tunes I played were as follows:
Apache Man of Mystery Theme from the Deerhunter Theme for young lovers Dance on The Savage Kon Tiki The Stranger
In reserve on the disk I had:
Riders in the Sky Midnight Argentina Guitar Boogie Walk Don't Run.
Don't write off Walk Don't Run though- I think the Shadows version sounds better and it may be refreshing for your audience.
Good wishes on the event
Mick

Many thanks to all those who replied to my thread - I really do appreciate it. So to answer some questions.
Noel: These are the numbers I feel fairly confident with:- Apache Atlantis Blue Star Bossa Roo Breeze and I Chattanooga Choo Choo F.B.I. Fandango Fender Bender Find Me A Golden Street Foot Tapper The Frightened City Genie With The L.B. Lamp Geronimo Ghost Riders In The Sky Kon-Tiki Man Of Mystery Midnight Mustang Peace Pipe Perfida Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt Round and Round Rumble Shadoogie Shindig Some Are Lonely Spring Is Nearly Here Stranger Theme For Young Lovers Theme From 'Shane' Walkin'
I agree with you comments re wanting to do it again and again. I ran an eight piece band in Shanghai and couldn't believe how quickly 3 x 40 minute sets passed by!! It was a real buzz. In fact our band was called The Buzz!! As a Rhythm guitarist I could musically hide behind the other musicians as far as mistakes go, but plying solo I think I would feel very much exposed. We;;, "Feel the fear - and do it anyway!" as the saying goes. Thanks very much for your advice - very much appreciated. Regards Dave

Hi Tonyl.
Thanks for your suggestion. That's a really good set list - I can play those numbers too!! Many thanks Dave
Hi Geza. I liked your suggestion re Riders in the sky. I'm really not up to speed on this number, but hopefully if all goes well at the venue i will be able to play there again and at that time I think I will open with this number (followed by a fast number!!) Many thanks Dave
Hi Mick. I like your set list apart from Theme From the Deer Hunter - as I haven't attempted to learn that one yet. Re echo's. I'm fortunate enough to have the HCSE, I also have a Gemini 3 and a Tech 21 Liverpool. At home a play through a Vox mini 3 and get close to the sound in my head!! I really like the possibility of arranging the patches in the same order as the set list - that really does save a lot of fiddling about. Our allocated time is around twenty minutes - so the less to do between numbers - so much the better! Sometimes - almost out of politeness - the audience might ask for an encore - yes, a good idea to keep some numbers in reserve!! Many thanks Dave

Hi Dave There's a nice mix of styles to choose from there. Apache would of course be almost mandatory. Of the others maybe throw in some of the best known ones e.g. Atlantis, F.B.I., Geronimo. Then perhaps Fandango, Bossa Roo, Flingel, Perfidia for variety and different rhythm etc. and a couple of the slow ones to balance out the fast ones. Some Are Lonely would be nice as it's not played that often. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Rosemary. Many thanks for your suggestions. Fandango, Bossa Roo, Flingel, Perfidia are some of my favourite numbers. Initially I'll have a time slot of between 20 & 30 minutes, so my choices are quite limited. Hopefully if they let me play again they'll allocate me a longer slot. Thanks again. Dave
