Hi Which way round should these two go please? Do I compress the signal before OD, or is it the other way around? Cheers Ian

Hi Ian
As has been said many times there is no right or wrong way to connect F/X.
The obvious answer is to try them both ways and see which you like best.

Ian, I'm running a 'belts & braces' system these days - two independent set-ups running into the same power amp switching between the two with an A/B A+B switch. In the 'A'set-up, everything (effects, amp modelling, modulation) is done via the iPad. The 'B' set up is a traditional pedal chain and the compression (MXR Dyna Comp) is at the front (not counting the volume pedal).
The chain, after the volume pedal is: Compression-Overdrive-Delay-Reverb-Joyo ACTone-Bose amp. This works fine for me.
Cheers
Noel

Hi Ian, I think we discussed this in private some time back when you were looking for a certain kind of overdriven sound with touch sensitivity. For that sound, the compressor was after the overdrive, not before. Before is the more usual way for long sustain with a more consistent amount of overdrive during the sustain period. As has been said, try both. Regards, Charlie

Yes - I think we did when I was trying Last Train Home but my little grey cells have failed me and I just couldnt remember. I have it set up compressor first. My kit is in bits at the moment due to a Gig tomorrow and I'll set up both ways in the afternoon and see if there is a difference that I can detect. Mnd you - in the Set tomorrow evening I'm only doing two tunes that require any OD - Last Train Home and Into The Light. I'll report back and thanks for your patience, Charlie - always much appreciated.. cheers ian

Ian, experimentation with compressor first works but it all depends on what you are looking for, if it's that traditional Hank sound then it most definitely needs to be last in the chain as all of the early recordings as far as I am aware were processed after the recordings as you need the compressor to work on the overall sound including echo's, but not on reverb if it's included in the sound.
It's the same today with modern productions, unless you are looking for a different effect.
