There has been a 50's Tele in my local Music shop for about two years, it has quite a bit of wear and is up for over £14k.
This guitar was stripped and checked over by the manager when it came in and passed as original.
I spoke to the owner of the shop yesterday, Joe Bonamassa called in last week and took a look at it, knowing Tele's very much, his first words were "Fake" he actually knew the guy from the States that made it and it bares his "tricks" regarding aging etc.
Luckily the shop was selling it for a customer so they didn't lose out!

doesn't surprise me in the slightest, there are so many fakes around. Problem is the values of them makes it ideal and some of the fakes are very good that it becomes impossible to tell.

In the late 70's when I begun to buy now called vintage guitars they were not rare but kinda hard to find. Most of the time I encounter people who just sold a used guitar, they hadn't a clue most of the time. Prices where very low back then and as we all know that changed a lot, especially after a article called stratmania in a USA magazine. I remember my biggest boo boo when I bought my 58 strat that bloke had also a genuine 59 Burst for sale for about FL 12500 (Dutch Guilder) in todays money that is about 5000 GBP............. But what did I know in 78 lol Today the net makes people aware what they have and they recognise now that ol' guitar of granddad or dad isn't a campfire burner but an serious guitar. People seems to forget Fender made dozens of strats a day.....in middle of the late 50's they made around 4000 tele's in two and a half years so define scare and rare with those numbers... With a vintage car it's ok to have nos parts or even replacement parts... With a vintage car it's ok to have a partial or total re-spray..... With a vintage car nobody drives with vintage tires and nobody drives with vintage brakes... But low and behold when a guitar part breaks down or just stop working....those solder points has to be virgin and made by a Mexican girl at Fender.... that screw has to be bought by Fender from a supplier......damnation on the person who bought that same nos screw and drive it in his beloved vintage guitar!!! Cheers Rob

Hi Phil,
When experts disagree....
I remember a few years back a television program about the authenticity of a painting and experts disagreed. I can not remember the name of the artist but whoever it was, he was well copied. The outcome was important to the owners. Ultimately the final say was with the remaining family members of the artist and not the art experts strangely enough. The whole of the expert art world would accept their verdict and that would be final. It was not favourable for the owners.
Whoever is right, the shop owner or JB ,what is wrong is profiting from misrepresenting something.
Regards, Tim.

Hi Tim,
I was back in the shop last night to see Ken Scott, to be fair, George the shop owner had taken the guitar out of the glass cabinet and was waiting for the owner to pick it up, I expect there is a seat ready for him and a cup of sweet tea ready for when he hears the news!

Hi Phil,
I have to admit my lack of knowledge and had to look up Ken Scott, having also read your other post, I think youngsters would say OMG! Hope you had a great time and had plenty of time to chat and ask questions.
The Tele:- I also had a look on the shop website just out of interest and there it was, it looks so nice, even if I could afford it, it really is not my sort of thing, owning rare or collectable stuff, including guitars. I don't have a problem with people who do, each to their own.
In the news recently.... £28 million for some carbon deposit (diamond) totally beyond me why anyone would be interested.
I imagine the chair and tea or something stronger were well recieved. I hope Joe Bonamassa played the Tele and maybe even signed it.
Regard, Tim.
