I find that if I set everything up to play Wonderful Land, it sounds right for all the early stuff apart from changes to the echo or pickup selection.
I like Ian's choices though, it would be interesting to hear some others.

Anything off the first album.
Especially Find Me a Golden a Golden Street I think that track is "The" sound of the Shadows.

"Wonderful Land". It was the first Shads tune I ever heard, the first tune I learned to play, the first tune I tried when I very first purchased Charlie's EFTP for my Zoom G2 a few years back and the first tune I ever played when I first visited my local Tyneside Shadows Club! The original recording has an "otherworldly", haunting yet "wonderful" sound. All The Best, John.

Happy and prosperous New Year to all. Liked a lot of early numbers with that sound. Shadoogie, Blue Star, Peace Pipe, Frightened City had that hard picking effect, FBI. Good sound back in the 60s. Cheers Les.

yeah Apache and Happy Birthday for me are "That Sound" but then even they are very different.
Is there really "That sound" or is it more of "That Time" and "Those Memories"??

Wonderful Land and Apache are unique as shown by their echo settings never being used elsewhere - so I think they cannot really be called 'that sound', special though they certainly are. The echoes I mainly use suggest the Shadoogie and Theme For Young Lovers settings are the most likely definitive sound - so something using one of those maybe ought to be the choice (Kon Tiki/Savage?). Personally I love Hank's sound on the Leo Sayer track 'Don't Wait Until Tomorrow'!

Hi,
For me Peace Pipe is the sound of the Shadows. When I first heard it in the movie I couldn't believe how evocative it was. A perfect title for the music. I was about 14 and thought that it would be wonderful to be able to play that. And today I can! Close second would be Wonderful Land.
(Also I love Hank's sound on Voice in The Wilderness)

Frightened city I think it has such a brilliant sound and so hard to replicate, my personnel favourite

I think we can safely say that many tunes are the Shads 'Signature' sound, but more importantly, it high lighted what a Fender Stratocaster could sound like, it was a new dimension in sound to an iconic guitar

The classics for sure - each a different 'signature' in their own way - but still uniquely the same band... For myself though - the one I never get fed up hearing, because of the energy, tone & vibe - is 'The Lost City'. That tune reminds me always that there is only one HBM.
