Hope you like my rendition of 'More Than I Can Say' I recorded this track using a Vox Tonelab into my 'Hall @ Collins Echo', patch 16 with a bit of extra Echo drive and Echo level etc. Gives a remarkable reverbish effect. The H@C went directly into my PC interface box using 'Cubase' to record the track over Roger Paulsson's backing track. More Than I Can Say

Hi Val, Just confirming the link now works fine for me. Very nice rendition and as you say the echo is just right for it. Perhaps the lead sound is a little "thin" on the higher notes but that could be changed with some EQ or Amp simulation plugins. Of course that is only my taste and doesn't really matter. The playing and feel is very good. Keep practicing and Chloe may give you a couple of lessons ! Regards George

Hi George
Thank you, I totally agree re the thin lead, but when I play it through my studio monitors it's great. If played through my PC speakers it's much thinner. I might do a bit of EQ in Cubase to thicken it. Anyway I appreciate your comments. Forgot to mention George, Chloe no longer has much time for guitar, she has just finished college and is now working for Virgin Airlines Customer Service at Canberra Airport. At the moment she is the youngest airline employee.

Hi Val, Well played and a good sound, although I agree with the "thin sounding" comment from George. I'd love to hear your eq'd version if you can find the time to do it/post it. Shame that Chloe isn't doing much guitar wise at the moment....but it'll always be there for her to pick up when she feels like it. Kind regards, Chris

Hi Val, Since your recording has been used as a demo track on the Hall & Collins website I think that alone says how much I like your recording! Regards, Charlie

HI Chris Thank you for your comments, most appreciated. Unfortunately Chloe has changed from becoming a 'rock star' to concentrating on her new found career, in the aviation industry. I told her to meet a pilot who plays guitar. Val

Hi Jono
Thank you for your comments. I find the H@C echo is not only great for the old original Shads stuff but also for this sort of tune with a bit of fiddling.

Hi Val Very nice recording. Lovely bottom end tone and I can hear the"thinness" you describe on the top two. It doesn't detract from the excellent production though. My new "practise" guitar suffers from the same problem - how would you EQ it so it sounded "fatter" or rather "more rounded" without screwing up the bottom end tone? Nice job Ian

Hey Val - this is very accomplished playing... played with real style and intent. I loved it. As far as the tone goes - I thought it suited the song very well. I would call it 'glassy' rather than 'thin' - and actually can remember in my early band days trying hard to get exactly that glassy sound with the Tom Scholz Rockman (remember those pioneering little units?!)
Best,
Tony

Hi Ian
Thank you for your comments, I did play around with it and as you say I really didn't have much luck reducing the top end without the bottom. Cubase does include a number of EQ's and a mastering one which lets you do that but I gave it a miss. I may look into that another time on another recording so I decided to leave it as is. Actually yesterday I changed my string gauge to 11's (had 10's on) and found it thickened the sound especially that top E. Personally I'd rather get the sound right before recording into the program.

Hi Tony
Once again, thank you for your comments. I had heard of the Tom Scholz Rockman (just checked up on the net) but have never used one. Talking about a classy sound, when I recorded 'More Than I can Say' I switched on the H@C and it defaulted on Patch 16, so I just went ahead and used it then just did a slight fiddling and said to myself, I've been searching for that sound for a while. I'm an oldie 70 this year, played in band for years but now find my hearing is changing the high end may be a problem. Just yesterday I recorded 'Peace Pipe' again but this time using the H@C Peace Pipe P15 patch. Today hearing it again it seems to lack the high so I did it once more by turning down the tone control on the strat. Anyway I do appreciate any comments.

Hi Val "More Than I Can Say" written by Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison from the Crickets and recorded by them. Followed by 'Bobby Vee' and also Leo Sayer I would say your version is more along the lines of the Leo Sayer one. You have capture the feel and sound of it really well and made a quality outstanding recording of it making It a most enjoyable listen
Pete.

Hi Pete
Sorry I took so long to respond. I've been working on some videos which I posted on you tube and completely forgot to look at any comments re 'More than I Can Say', that is one I also posted with a video backing on the Val Starr You tube site.
Yes I did listen to Leo Sayer and Hank and did something sort of in between.
Thank you
