Hi All
Ive been dabbling with some chord progressions and putting my own melodies to them but nothing serious.
I wondered if there were any members here that write their own music either instrumental or otherwise and whether you had any tips to share for me just begining to get in to this.
Thanks in advance
Regards
Steve

Steve Been doing stuff like that for years I didn't think anyone would interested on these sites as it's not about guitar straps or picks. Are you talking about instrumental or vocal or both ? George Sent from my SM-G900F using proboards

Hi George
Im certainly interested ;-)
Ive been experimenting with instrumentals using some basic chord patterns and putting melody's to them but i would be interested in vocals or instrumentals.
Thanks

So am I. I've got a guitar strap and a pick so am ready to rock - if only i could come up with a tune! Lol! Seriously, sometimes a phrase pops in your head (I call it Earworm), or a noodle on your guitar produces a riff and away you go. Not wishing to sound like an advert but I find BIAB invaluable. I can run chord sequences, try all sorts of weird combinations (I prefer boxer shorts these days ), make up my own "band" and never have to buy them a drink, and if it doesnt work, no harm done. Good luck,Steve. Would be interesting to hear what you come up with. Ian

Steve............if you check my back threads you'll find that I've posted quite a number of my own instrumental compositions. I've also written several "songs" (i.e. with vocals)but not posted them on Charlies'.
There are many different ways to go about and you'll end up finding your own method but one I use more often than not is messing around with chord progressions (as you are yourself) and then finding a rhythmic pattern and tempo that suits. I know that Jeff Lynne and the brothers Gibb wrote all their monster hits in this way.
I've got a book entitled "the mechanics of songwriting...a guitarists guide" by Leo Coulter, published by Siduri Books which is well worth its cover price of around £15.
Then you've got guys like Tony Lowe (Tolo) who posts amazing compositions on these pages and whose method sounds from his description to be be more "emotionally" and concept driven. If you've not listened to any of his threads you should check them out.
I wish you success but be prepared for a considerable amount of indifference from many of the forum users who will not want to stray too far from their Shadows favourites (and other popular well known oldies).
Regards
Baz
PS....if you find my threads history and scroll down to "Long Ago" you'll find a song which did get quite a good response and which I think demonstrates the approach I use. When you get something you're pleased with you will get quite a buzz from it.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions. I have band in a box so will be trying some experiments there and will post up anything I think is any good.
