I intend on buying a set of Kinman pickups for my Japanese 'Hank Marvin' Fender.
I can't make my mind up on the Hank Marvin Modern set or the Hank Marvin Shadows set. Can anyone who owns either or both give me any advice on which set would give me a good general 60's and modern tone. Having listened to philmcg's sound files who uses both, his sound is equally good using either set which adds to my confusion as to which set to fork out £219 for.

Well, if you want Hanks "modern" sound but also generic 60' tones too, I'd go for the FV-HMS. Thats what I did. My SFs are all played on a Brason Strat eith FV-HMS. Note - EQ helps a lot too for Modern Hank - more Middle needed, I find. Strings are v important too. Elixir 11s in my case I'm sure PMcG could give you chapter and verse as he has both. Ian

Many thanks Ian.
String wise I'm currently using Exilir 12 - 52's on this guitar. I'm also drawn to the FV-HMS for the fuller sound , but I keep seeing the Hank Marvin 'Shadows' logo which makes me think I should go for the Impersonator 54's, but I must admit I do like his modern tone.

Hi Glen I have a set of Kinman impersonator 54 and the sound is fantastic! I like the gain but as I was not there in 1954..I do not know how pickups of that era sounded then. Sheendigs

Hi Glen. I use the Impersonater 54's and am pleased with the sound they produce. I usually use the HCSE and a Gemini 3. I use a Tech 21 Liverpool to tweak the sound further - if required. Regards Dave

Hi Glen, I have used both of the Kinman sets. The 54 impersonators have a great early sound and if you wire a tone pot to the bridge pickup the sound moves towards a more modern Hank sound when adding a little tone. (only my opinion) I would also add that the impersonator neck and middle pups are the best of both sets. Ken.

Many thanks for your feedback.
Having listened to many sound files from both Philmcg and Ian (sixchannel), they are both an excellent sound which makes it harder to choose one over the other. Although I like playing the older Shads tunes my main preference is Ballad style playing which might give the FV-HMS the edge. I have a set of 1998 vintage Kinmans in my Burns Drifter, but just had an e-mail from Kinmans this morning saying their pickup technology has come a long way since 1998.
Why is life never simple !!

How`s it going Glen.
I`ve got a set of Impersonator fat 50`s and I really like the sound of them and having EQ in play as Ian and Dave mentioned makes a big difference as well. One thing I would suggest is to send an email to Kinman and let them know exactly what sound you`re looking for and they will suggest which pickups would be suitable. They`re very helpful in that respect and, added to the suggestions on this thread, you should be able to make a decision. Let us know how you get on.
Cheers
Adrian
