I have recently been Googling recording techniques, one thing that came up regularly was its a very common practice to Double Track a guitar part (or vocal) especially the Rhythm part, by this I mean recording the part twice, not just copying a track and panning it left and right. This apparently gives the sound a much wider and fuller sound than just a Mono track.
Does anyone know if Hank used this technique with his later (post 1970's) recordings or was it just a mono track ?

Listen to "Footapper" for an answer. As for DT'ing rhythm tracks with acoustic, I do it all the time to "thicken" up the sound, along with duplicated tracks shifted by upto 20ms.

Mike, many thanks for your answer.
I appreciate some songs may require double tracking to get a special effect, but I'm talking about normal recordings like Wonderful Land, Atlantis etc. would these also be D/T'd as a normal recording technique.

I'd say no, but ready to be corrected.
Mike.
PS: Just re-read your OP and missed the bit about post 70's, so not sure about my answer now.

There are many double tracked lead parts as scanners mentioned Geronimo for example, Foot tapper has actually got a delay to it. The main double tracking to the shadows tunes are really overdubs which are again on many recordings, FBI, Spring is nearly here, Sleepwalk. Theme for the boys, I could go on, the overdubs are really Hank/Bruce adding bits, also snare, kick and percussion and are there to thicken and enhance the mix.
A lot of what appears to be left and right panned double tracking is actually, for example, Hank on the right track and Bruce's mic picking up the mic spill, Bruce being panned left, so Hank is right and left, what gives it the stereo sound is the few mls of delay from Hanks amp to Bruce's mic.
