Im completely deaf in my right ear through an illness in my teens and i have considerable hearing loss in my left ear. For which i wear a hearing aid. Ive been playing and teaching guitar professionly for 40 years but the past year doing gigs has been a struggle . The sound on stage is just a mishmash of noise with no definition. Ive had my hearing aid altered , ive stood in different areas of the stage the band have even dropped the volume ,but no joy. Has anyone had these problems . if so can they recommend a hearing aid or advice. Regards Phil

Hi Phil, I'm with you on this one, but I don't have an answer. I've played in bands for 53 years and I also wear hearing aids. These are private expensive digital one's which are better than the NHS one's.
I have 3 separate programs that I can switch between with a remote control. One is for normal speech which cuts out background noise, one is for instant half volume for a noisy enviroment (although I have a remote volume control) and another channel with full range frequency for music.
When I am out front at our Shadows Club I can hear the music fine, but when I get up to play I find it difficult to hear myself. People out front say they can hear me fine so its not a volume issue, but like you I find it very frustrating.

Hiya Phil,
Some artists use in-ear monitors, could you adapt one of those to your requirements?

Hi, I am having the same sort of problem , I have had to use my hearing aids to play, but a few months ago I went for my normal check up, and they said that I had such a massive drop in the hearing range in my right ear, that they couldn't adjust my hearing aids until I had an MRI scan to see what was wrong , I used to manage ok playing with a live band , but when we had practice meetings with backing tracks, its a nightmare ! I need the BT loud so I can hear it , but then I also need the amp fairly loud to hear what I am playing , at the moment I have given up playing its so frustrating trying to learn any new numbers ,I also now have tinnitus all the time in my right ear, the hearing specialist at the hospital have suggested 5 options to try , none sound very nice , I may plump for the Steroid injection into my ear as they say this has a lesser risk of side effects ,Ron

Hi Ron,
I have had tinnitus for at least thirty years, it is constant, sometimes louder than others, some people have a real problem with it, I have heard of suicides because of it...I manage to handle it and it causes me no real problems, maybe I'm one of the lucky ones

So nothing to do with a drummer right by the side of you and an amp on 11 then. Phil
