Hi My 12yr old nephew has been asking(pestering) me to teach him how to play guitar, and as a willing uncle I can't help but think what would be the best route to take. now when I first started, there was the Bert Weedon books to help, and like most of us took the path of being self taught, copying, and wanting to be like all our heroes. So I would appreciate any of your views, and opinions, as to any new methods on the market, something simple, have you experienced any of the tuition methods that are out there,I can teach him all I know but kids today need a quicker and more attractive way of tuition. Also I want to buy him his first guitar, but I always think that it is easier to learn on an electric guitar than an acoustic, which have higher actions, bigger strings, making it much harder to fret, especially with tender fingers, so any advice on which guitar would be suitable, Cheers Colin

We will have to differ on that, I bought my grandson a nice Yamaha electro-acoustic to learn on, www.guitarguitar.co.uk/product/13041511362717--yamaha-apxt2nt-naturalit's precisely because learning /practicing on an acoustic that will make him a far better player in the end. It is not easy learning any skill and you have to put effort into it and starting with a nice low action & light strings will not IMHO be a good start, I'm sure many others will disagree and believe in not making life hard nowadays for kids but ........... Mike. PS: my grandson is having "professional" lessons and I was not impressed when he showed me hwt to play a one note intro to "Smoke on the Water"

Look at Justin Sandercoe's site, (www.justinguitar.com), for inspiration. I keep referring back to it. You could either let him follow it, or take ideas from it for you to teach.

Thanks for your replies, there seems to be a similarity in getting private tuition, I know of a friend who's son started lessons, and the first thing taught was yes...Smoke on the Water, ouch! I like the look of the Justin guitar site, its as basic as can be , still undecided with the choice of guitar, I still prefer an electric.... but I will let my nephew decide when we visit the music shop this weekend, be my luck for him to choose a custom shop strat priced at thousands of pounds, in yer dreams lad, and mine Colin

Hello Colin,
Is your nephew right or left handed? More to the point will he be playing left or right handed?
My dear youngest son died February before last and he still had a left handed Encore Strat. - almost unused, that I bought for him many years ago as a beginners guitar. If you would like to have it pm me and I'll send it off post free.
Cheers
Mick

Hello Colin,
Just to clarify my note, there is no charge for the guitar or postage cost if it is of use to you. You sound like the type of chap every youngster would love to have as an uncle and I would just like to see my late boys instrument going to some nice people.
Cheers
Mick
