My dad has an older Zoom with the Charlie's patches, and he has a Fender Strat.
Can anyone suggest a cheaper amplifier that would do a reasonable job of replicating the Hank Marvin sounds (e.g. Apache, Fingal Blunt,)? Smaller would be better too, as I need to take it on a plane to get it to him...and a VOX tube amp will get smashed up by the baggage handlers! Would any, say, $200 amp do the trick?...or can someone suggest some particular brands/models that would be more suitable than others? I know nothing about amps!!

Hi Gizmo
I have recently purchased the Boss Katana. Its a 50w transistor amp but have to say it is incredible. I use it at lots of guitar clubs etc nice and lightweight but great tone. well worth a look.

Hi..........from the same Roland stable as the Boss the cube range are compact and give a good tonal sound. I use a 80 GX for live gigs in a 9 piece band and It holds its own.

Does your Father want something to gig with or just something to play at home?
If its something to gig with the above suggestion's are fine.
If its something to play at home you cant go far wrong with the VOX MINI 5 Rhythm. I have several valve amps, Vox AC15 / AC30 etc. but its the Vox Mini 5 Rhythm that I use at home and in my holiday caravan.
It is small, light, and very loud for a 5 watt amp. ( it fits into a normal size shopping bag, you could take it on the 'plane with you! ) It has a load of features, AC15 for early Shadows tunes, AC30 for later Shadows tunes, Fender Amps, Marshall amps etc. even a drumbeat machine with 99 different beats! All this for about £135.00.
PS I have no vested connection with Vox in any way!

I also use a VOX MINI 5 Rhythm amplifier and for its size it does a great job and it only weighs about 4 kg.

Maurice.

I've got a VOX DA-5 which is the predecessor to the Mini Rhythm. It's a great little amp, so I reckon you won't go far wrong with the Mini Rhythm.

Excellent. Looks like I can get one here in Australia for a reasonable price so I think I'll go ahead and get him one. Thanks every body for your help!
