I saw an old clip of the Shads on sounds of the 70's, and Hank was playing a black Strat with large head stock and Maple finger board through an AC-30, couldn't quite make out the echo unit but it sounded very authentic. They played Riders In the Sky and that guitar and echo sounded superb, better in some ways than his more modern sound, but that just me being subjective.

Thank's Gary, Hank's sound/guitar tone really impressed me, I'm not sure which venue they were at for the TV programme, sounds of the 70's I imagine they were stock pickups in his 70's Fender, I don't think he was into changing pickups in those days, this led me on to a Black Squire 70's modified with large head stock and Maple board that's going for around £300 +, looks like a good guitar for an upgrade project.

Hi Peter,Others will probably have more info on the black strat so I'll add my little bit,Originally bought as a sunburst around 1972/3 it was sprayed black, fitted with Gibson humbucker and fender widerange pickups and toggle switch, hardware also gold plated...then changed pickups back to stock except dimarzio fs1 at the bridge, used on recordings up until 84 (guardian angel) then gave the guitar to his son Ben who put a rosewood neck on it about 20 yrs ago.If anyone knows more please add to it. regards gary

Thanks Gary, how interesting, so he even fiddled in those days. The Riders in the Sky which was on the programme clip was definitely a single coil sound. I always liked the FS1, many of Hank's recordings were on the FS1.
love the picture and the 2 Roland Echo machines, probably 301's I always liked that sound through his Mesa Boogie.
Thanks
Peter
