Hi Richie,
As far as I know buddy holly did not use any echo or reverb as we know it.
Regards,
Maurice.

Hi Richie, Some earlier songs have a rock and roll slap echo added in the studio. That'll Be The Day has it. Regards, Charlie

Hi Richie, Those pickup covers weren't plastic in the mid 50s, they were described as bakelite but I believe that isn't even the correct name for the material Fender used. Anyway, it was brittle and that is why chunks of them are missing. Buddy Holly strummed the guitar very hard. Sonny Curtis told me that he was annoyed at the time because Buddy also damaged Sonny's Martin acoustic, but that it would probably be worth a lot now because Buddy damaged it! Have a look at these sites: www.croxguitars.com/fenderplas.htmwww.crazyparts.de/art-of-aging/covers-knobs-tips-for-fender/covers/index.phpRegards, Charlie

Hi, On the subject of Buddy Holly's guitar and playing style - does anyone know which string gauge he typically used back in the days? Regards, Bernie

Im guessing heavy gauge 13s like ive read about and like charlie has told me on many ocation back in the 50s and 60s light gauge strings were hard to come by. The gauges im asuming were a little bit like acoustic thickness.s with the G string being a wound. Ive been round the block in all this in the past up and down with different gauges . Thinking silly things like oh maybe my tone will get closer to hanks early tone or like buddys if i use the same gauge. I now dont think that way .just about 2 or 3 wks ago i posted up a post on using 9s and 8s. But ive desided to stay with the gauge that .my strat was set up with 10/46 I could go to 9/46 but im happy with 10s. At end of the day if you have a good guitar thats set up well plays and sounds well thats all that matters. And we have to remember back in the day .these people used what was available at the time im sure. Richie

Hi Bernie, Certainly heavy gauge by today's standards. I also think he mainly used flat wounds although I remember reading that he bought Black Diamond strings (I know they were round wound as I tried them once) from some out of the way place while they were on tour, so I guess he used whatever he could get hold of. No problem bernie Im just frightened to use 13s now. I feel sorry the trust rod 🤣🤣🤣 so i prefer to now just stay with 10s i found 8s to thin 9s were ok. But 10s are just right for me personaly i use fender and fender bullets Richie

i put 13s on my strat and i can tell you my playing suffered! They are significantly hard work and take a long time to adjust to. Stick to what you are used to, the sound difference is not worth it

Stick to what you are used to, the sound difference is not worth it Thicker strings will give a thicker tone and the poles on my pick ups on the g string and D are high for wound strings mostly for 3rd G string .but even so id not use 13s again .i could if i wanted to get a set of 10s with a wound 3rd D'addario do 10/46 with a W 3rd But im happy with fender Cheers Richie

I desided against trying to make the pick up covers have chips out of them .ive been thinking about it and it would be a silly thing to do but i am replacing the pick up covers knobs switch tip and trem tip with 1954 vintage accessory kit one😁
