Hi folks, were having another live music night of Shadows music and others, covering around 40 numbers or so. Its a new venue as our usual venue is being refurbished, will be covering old and new Shads numbers. The Venue is the' 'Sprayhurst Club' Boundary Road, St Helens, Merseyside, everyone will be made welcome, for an easy going evening. If your in the locality, pop down and introduce yourself, we may even get you up to do a number. cheers Peter

Hi folks, thanks to those that turned up last night, was a good night, we had an issue with our CD player which went down and couldn't play music in the two intervals, so we had to play more music ha ha, Ahh well, its the way it goes I guess, see you on the 14 April, same venue. Pete

To anyone in or around St Helens who likes Shadows music (any member here I would think), it was a night of excellent music led by Pete himself. More good news is, it cost nothing apart from a couple of drinks - and even they were cheap.
I can recommend the next one on the 14th April,
Len

Hi Pete, yes, not sure how I can fix it, I tried to link the video, I can get it to work on here but its into my facebook account, I'm not sure its the best way. The video was done by a friend at the club on the evening and I think its because of Facebook protection of the video source owner, why it wont let you view it. I will try to see if I can find a way around it. cheers Pete ps, I tried to delete the post but you cant delete a post.

Hi Pete, Nice playing, that AC30 you bought from me sounds really good with the Hall and Collins echo.

Hi Barry, yes, sweet as a nut as they say, the AC15/EF86 channel is key I think for the early first period sound, makes a real difference, as you know you are limited as to what you can pick up with a Phone mic but it gives an idea, my mate Tom is going to record the full do in April, he has some fancy video cameras, so should get a more accurate representation. the AC30 combined with the H&C really does deliver but again its the sweet spot via your EQ on the Amp that is the key to getting it right so to speak. There were 7 recordings in all I will put up FBI, complete with duff note ha ha, the thing with this Gigg was that it was all just fun, nothing formal or serious, it was just having a good time playing out favourite Numbers from the Shads and a few others. cheers Pete

I don't know about 'spot the duff note' Pete, when I had that Amp most of the notes used to come out duff!! I should have'd watched you a lot closer when you came down to me to buy it. I only sold it to you because all the notes came out wrong!! Thinking about it now, it was probably me playing it wrong?!!

Hi Barry, Ahh, I it was just a fuse ha ha, shadows music is always the same, as you know, its note for note and it never fails, you drop a note and all heads turn, when playing Rock music riffs, no one knows any different happens every time. I'm not sure were FBI was in the set lists but just to say, my mate counted 40 numbers covered by the end of the night, I was zapped by the end of it ha ha :-) I would like to point out that the Kinmann pickups I have in the guitar, fair up a lot better than I thought they would for earlier shads tunes, so I guess its working out the compromise between the 56 pickups and the Kinmans, in my opinion, I think the Kinmans generalise the sound for all periods better than the 56s would. I am well aware this is down to what personal equipment it is your using of course. cheers Peter

Hi Pete,
Are you telling me it was only a fuse that caused me all those wrong notes?!! Blimey ...and there's me thinking it was my playing!
I have the Kinmans in my guitar, everyone said 'oh yeh..they are alright for the later Shads stuff, but no good for the early stuff. Maybe not if you are a 'full blown' tribute band but I think 90% of people wouldn't notice at a normal gig as long as you played the tunes a bit 'half decent'. If the Kinmans were good enough for Hank then they are good enough for me!
Your right about playing Shads tunes....one wrong note and everyone notices....play a bit rock all over the place, and no one notices! But this is the price we pay for playing our favorite music.

Hi Barry Yes, your right, 90% wouldn't know but if you know there is a Shadows fan in the room and even more, he plays the shads, then the pressure is on, to try and get it something right, ha ha :-) Pete

Hi Pete Live and entertaining just as it comes it is what it is and what ever happens you carry on with a smile on your face after all nothing you can do other than fall apart and that would be even worse it even happens to the best even HBM live just one of those things that goes with playing the guitar.

Hi Pete, yes, your correct, it was just great fun playing the music we love and all for free, the days of getting paid for playing a guitar went years ago, ha ha and now you know why, its about enjoying it. cheers Peter

Hi Peter, really good sound and well played. Its just me but i prefer to hear the songs without the extra notes added. Played as the recording but again thats only my preference phil

Hi Phil, thanks for the positive comments and I take your point re 'notes' played, I guess its what mood I'm in at the time, if it was for a specific dedicated recording, I would play as per record but in this laid back environment, no one new any different :-) cheers Pete

I liked the way you played these numbers Pete, I was there to see YOU play them, not Hank Marvin. If I want to listen to the exact thing I'll play the CD.
Long live Live Music.

Hi Len many thanks, glad you enjoyed the night, I listened to the shadows on the live at the ABC theatre '1962', its interesting that 'Hank' himself didn't play the tunes exact to the record, examples, Sleepwalk and Shadoogie, differed, but at the end of the day, its how you want to play it 'at the time'. More recently, Cliff and the Shadows reunion tour, The Savage 'bridge section' was completely different from the record, in fact you couldn't get more different, so its okay to add your stamp/interpretation to a tune, so long as you make sure its recognisable :-). cheers Pete

The Savage was probably the version I've heard called Witch Doctor (there'e a tab for it on Goran's site). I'm convinced that on the original as we know it Hank got it completely wrong but Norrie Paramor let it go because it sounded OK.

I'd just like to say that I've been playing bluegrass banjo since 1969 and a great fan of the late Earl Scruggs of Beverly Hillbillies fame, he was rated as the best banjo player in the world , he was known for not playing the same tune exactly the same, he kept to the melody but would add or take away a couple of notes,.....just waiting for my new mexican strat to arrive so I'm like a dog with two wotsits at present.
