Just want to warn people about putting cover songs up and getting them removed, some artists are worse than others with the copyright on youtube and all, but I had one pulled from Twitter. I played the intro to Hotel California, no Eagles backing or anything just me and I got an email it was in breach of copyright, I've never had anything pulled from social media before. The Eagles are notorious about copyright, I always thought it was Glen Frey, but Don Henley is the precious a hole I think, when I last saw them live they warned people not to take photos or anything, I saw a concert on youtube Henley lectures people pulling cameras out how what they are doing is against the law and everything, Frey just makes a joke about watching their 70s stuff on youtube! Hi Matthew,
They are trying to protect their livelihood or possibly a contract with a photographer or publication. The Rolling Stones don't allow video/photos at their gigs either and there are many other artists that do the same.

Hi Matthew,
Led Zeppelin are the same on YouTube. Had a cover of theirs removed.
You can usually look at YouTubes music policies page to see if a songs OK, but this seems to have stopped working recently.

I wonder how these cover bands get on do they have to pay royalties? Destroying the livlihood of the Roling Stones, they are billionaires how would we be doing that? I can kind of understand them not wanting people to video concerts but I don't see why photos are banned? With the money they charge for tickets it's the least they can do is allow photos from the fans that make them rich in the first place. At least Gene Simmons has the right attitude and I don't agree with his morals when it comes to money, he's the most greedy selfish man on the planet, but his attitude with fans and photos and videos it's all good publicity. An artist starting out I could understand the financial reasons, but the biggest one with a bee in their bonnet about this are the richest artist on the planet which is weird? Prince was another one he was the worst, no videos of his got onto youtube! A guy on Twitter showed himself to Steve Lukather playing the guitar solo on dancing on the ceiling (which I never knew he played btw)Steve said great job and shared it, so he obviously doesn't have a problem Matthew

The impression of 'Rock Stars'/ artists being a Happy go lucky bunch of people is definitely a myth not all of them but a lot are very much £MONEY orientated some to the point of being obsessive about it.I think a lot of you can think of the names of a few at least it's no wonder they protect there work/assets so vigorously the entertainment/music business is a MultiMillion Dollar/Pound industry with nearly every angle of the business covered by all sorts of rule, laws and legal writs.

It’s easy to get emotive on this subject and go on about greedy musicians, but copyright is an important issue and it is there to protect the creators of music, art, writing, etc. As a cartoonist, I have suffered from having my work ripped off for commercial purposes many times and believe me, it’s d**n'd annoying!
Now, don’t get me wrong. In my own work, I have no issue with a member of the public ‘borrowing’ something of mine and sticking it on a personal birthday card to Auntie Mable or whatever. Similarly, I see no problem with ‘borrowing’ music for the purposes of personal entertainment, be it just for oneself or playing at a club, making recordings for pleasure, etc.
But there are many people out there, stealing others people’s hard work and using it to make a lot of money, and that is why we need the copyright laws. So, whilst I agree that we can show a lot of flexibility with regard to using other people’s work when it is not done for profit, please don’t knock copyright per se, those of us in creative businesses need that protection..

Hi Noel, I agree completely, Noel, I too have my work plastered all over everywhere without permission, as an Architectural modelmaker and although I am flattered, I do know that certain traders have used my work to represent what they produce as manufacturers. It is then that you have to ask questions, so yes, if your work is used to make money for other people, then it is a copyright issue. cheers Pete

Just out of interest, I’ve always fancied doing a cover of Stairway To Heaven, but know Led Zep covers tend to get pulled quickly. It happened when I tried to put my cover of What Is.... on YouTube. My covers are really only for friends and family, just so they can actually see me play.
I have just created a video using the version from Karaoke-Version website, my BT’s of choice, along with the album cover.
Previously, my LZ covers never even got onto YouTube before being bounced off, this one has. I will see how long it last before I try to record my version and put it up.

Well, that didn’t take long, after 8 minutes I received the YouTube e-mail and my video was removed.
So, back to other songs I’m working on.

Why don't bands release "Karaoke" mixes, of their work, so if a cover is published they have had a payment up front anyway. I think HBM and the Shads of the past would have all made good money if all their past tracks could be re-mixed sans lead, UBHank would be out of business pronto.
