Just wondering if Hank used reverb on any Shadows and/or solo recordings or live work.
Or was it just echo units?
Tim.

Hi Tim, If you were to ask Hank (like I once did) he would tell you he never used reverb. We do know that it was often added by the studio though but it is difficult to tell when it was and when it wasn't. One example I know for a fact is correct: My Resistance Is low, there is reverb on Hank's guitar during the damped sections only, for the rest of the tune it was turned right down, probably off altogether. If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear it. If you try to make a backing track out of it with the phase reverse and sum to mono method, you will definitely hear the reverb only during the sections mentioned. Regards, Charlie

Hi Tim,
As Charlie said, sometimes it is difficult to hear reverb especially if there is echo (delay) used, you need a good ear and know how to destinguish between the two in the mix, sometimes it is obvious with tracks like Dance on where the guitar is panned one way and the reverb the other, also stereo reverb was sometimes added, if your gear allows you to switch from stereo to mono it's easier to hear, it can also sound like a kind of halo.
I think what Hank was refering to was that he didn't use reverb in his setup as I am sure he knew that it was often added post production.

Hank certainly never used reverb when playing live, but some was certainly often added when recording in Abbey Road.
