How would you describe the difference between Hank’s classic tone (i:e Apache, Wonderful Land, etc.) and his modern tone (Final Tour, etc.)?
Tim.

More bass on his later tone, and used the bridge pickup almost all the time. Regards, Charlie

I love the kinman era tones When I got back into playing guitar again, I found that "early" sound almost unatainable unless I apparently invested in loads and loads of kit which I didnt want to = couldnt afford. I had a set of Kinman CVs but they didnt do it for me so sold them on. Then I bought FV's for the Brason and I was hooked on the sound - modern or not. I guess as long as it works for you, its cool. "Into The Light" - Lift Music?! Mmmhh! Cheers ian

hi steve, its obviously an age thing then !!also its the thing about what your first influences are that stick with you. plus the fact that the early stuff was more exciting music.

Every tone Hank's had over the years has been absolutely superb. Even Skunk Baxter's a big admirer of Hank's tone mastery. But I get what Andy means - Apache was a tone none of us had heard before, and it was not only new to us, it sounded mean and dangerous. And he kept it coming with FBI, The Frightened City to The Savage and more. I'm of the same generation, and, much as I admire all of Hank's work, those early tones still send a shiver down my spine.

Quite apart from the tone, which has varied and evolved with time, and with justification...we all evolve as musicians....Hank's touch and feel made him my stand-out artist. He has inspired me through the years more than any other. And there have been many great guitarists.
I think Hank would make even a cheap throw-out guitar sound good.

There was also his later FS-1 tone period which I preferred to more recent sounds

Of course the early tracks were wonderful - and Kay is absolutely right - it rightfully places Hank as a pioneer and they assure his place and influence in any guitar hall of fame...
For myself - I really loved the experimental sounds of Hank’s early solo album. I love the majesty of ‘The Miracle’ the sheer coolness of ‘Goodnight Dick’ and the bounce of ‘Boogaloo’.
But my all time favourite default Hank tone - is on ‘The Lost City’ from ‘Sound of The Shadows’ - simply awesome. Hank was on point when he recorded that... like ‘Morning Star’...
