Hi all! I know strings have been covererd a lot on this forum, and im tempted to take the plunge! I use ernie ball 12-56 (n e slinky)! Assuming the heaviest gauge elixir do is 11-52, is there anyone who can convince me to change from the ernies, to a slightly lighter gauge!
The life span of the elixir strings would be the sole reason for the change!..not the gauge!..assuming i would not lose any tone! Many thanks... steve

Hi Steve,
I cant answer your question directly but one thing to consider is whether the G string is wound or plain as they can sound very different according to which pickups you have on your guitar. I find with a wound G and staggered pole pieces on the pickup you need a pole piece higher with the wound string and a lower one is OK with a plain string.

Hi Barry
It will definately be a plain third due to the bends!
The set up is a 60s mexican strat with HMV Kinmans! Many thanks... Steve

Just my two pennies worth. I’ve just put Elixir Optiwebs on my Strat. My fingers are quite corrosive and, although I’m only a bedroom player, strings soon sound dull. I only use 10’s so can’t help in that respect, but the new strings sound and feel fine to me. I’ll see how they wear.
Tim.

Let me know how you get on time wise Tim ok!
I re-string with the Ernies around every 6/7 weeks!.. playing one to three shows a week, tho i think after 2 weeks they're already losing twang/sustain! Many thanks.. Steve

Evven when I was gigging regularly Steve I could get at least three months out of a set of D'Addarios. You could probably get your favourite guage in a set of them, even if you only tried them once.

Hi Len.. yes the D'addarios seem to be a favourite on this forum too!
Three months is an impressive time for any set of strings! These will be another option,if like some people say..the coating on the elixir nanoweb changes the tone!
Reading the old threads!..some say yes ..some say no! I guess its what your ears hear to your own satisfaction!
Many thanks.. Steve

Steve,
The Optiwebs are supposed to have a more natural touch and sound. Certainly I haven’t really noticed any real difference between these and my D’Addarios I had on previously.

Hi, I use 9:42 Elixer, expensive but seem to last forever, I don't use the heavier gauge strings unless I want to just cover the old numbers but I have to Generalise covering a broad spectrum, Will have to get another guitar, one just for the oldies ha ha :-) cheers Peter

Hi Steve, I have used D’addarios 11/49 for quite a while and they bend okay. I use them for gigs as well. The tone is good for older type shad’s numbers as well as the new. Regards, Garry.

I use D’Addario pure nickel 11-48 strings. I play most days and have a short gig once a month. I change my strings every two months, and usually change the B and Top E string every month. Dave

It's over a year since I changed the Elxirs on my Strat. Some of my guitars still have the set I sets I strung them with three or four years ago and they still sound good! I don't play all of them every day, of course, but when I do, just a wipe down is all they need.

Hi Noel.. i see on some threads that you rate the elixirs!
That's a great time for a set of strings!
If tone is not an issue i think i could live with that!
Many thanks.. Steve

Hello Steve,
I have been using elixirs for some time now and first heard how good they were fron Noel as well as Ian (six channel). Ian commented to the effect that you know it’s time to change them, when they start to get a bit “furry”, and he was right. And I expect you will find yourself asking yourself “ are these furry enough yet?”.
As for tone, I understand the old Shadows tunes were often recorded using old dull strings. Elixirs don’t have the day one sound where the sound is too bright, but say the day 10 sound when regular strings have settled in and are more generally useable. Haven’t found them to then move on to become too dull...........just “furry”.
I’ve found they give a good all round tone.
Cheers
Mick

I do like the twang of new strings, but like you said.. its hard to believe some of those tracks we're recorded on strings i would of ditched months back🤤 Regards.. Steve

Hi Steve, A lot of recordings of the shads were recorded with old dull strings because fresh new ones were hard to come by... At one time a few strings on that strat were slightly thinner, then the ones before so Hank use cigaret paper on the nut to fill the gap in the slots... hence some recordings have a dull sound on the D and the G string... Coincidently I get more compliments on my shads recordings with older strings for the older hits in comparison with new fresh strings. Here is a sample with older strings, if/when you like the sound I'll tell how old they were, the gauge used is 14-62 D'addario. Witch DoctorCheers Rob

Hi Rob. I hit the link for Witch Doctor and got The Savage. A great sound and well played. I really like your Solo/ Middle Eight variation! I’m surprised by the gauge of your strings - I imagine hard work to play and/ bend! Dave

Hi all, Thanks for the nice words about my playing and sound! Well Steve, the strings on that recording were more than 10 years old on that guitar! Be assured no rust etc only a little dull... I have more strats and I don't have to play the same guitar that often. The gauge is indeed a little heavy, but for me not that hard to play(I bend the strings on my Bass VI also), I use this gauge just on two strats... a 58 (first on the left on my avatar) and a 60 slab board for the old hits. On the other ones, I use 11-52....easy to bend for Cavatina, Parisienne Walkways etc. This recording was done in one go only with a strat-HCSE-HB AcTone-recorder so no microphone and tube amp in sight....so bring on the EF86 project Cheers Rob
