Hi Guys, I just got the news on Facebook that Charlie visited the Hungarian band called "The Shades" in Budapest during rehearsal yesterday. The lead guitarist Gabor Pataki has been using Hall&Collins Signature Echo for a while now, hence the occasion. You can see a few pictures that were taken on the rehearsal here: www.facebook.com/TheShadesgitar/?ref=br_rsCheers, Geza

Hi Geza, Yes, I was there with Istvan to see The Shades on Wednesday evening. I took a working prototype board of the "EF86" project which was used all evening. It sounded very good through the normal channel of Gabor's AC30CC2X. The Shades have been together for 19 years, and it is evident through the well rehearsed tunes they played. We all had a drink and a chat afterwards, and Gabor presented me with a bottle of wine, for which I was very grateful. Regards, Charlie

Dear Charlie and István,
It was pleasure to meet you and thank you very much for your visit! The "EF86" prototype will be great, the sound is absolutely fantastic, please add me to the list! ;-)
All the best for you and we hope we can meet together next time too in Budapest.

Hi Gabor, Thank you, I have added you to the list. Thank you also for your comment about the "EF86" project. Just so everyone knows, the preamp was set to the 1959 AC15 sound when you played Riders In The Sky. We will certainly meet again when I come to Hungary. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie just wondering how you got to Hungry you were telling me you weren’t a good flyer did you go under the English Channel? There is uproar in Australia at the moment one of the Australian football finals is on in Perth , Melbourne v West Coast and they’ve jacked up airfares to ridiculous prices, it’s cheaper to fly overseas than from Melbourne to Perth at the moment Matthew

Hi Matthew, I don't mind flying, but it's a dangerous world now. I just feel safer and more in control by driving instead. I drove to Vienna in Austria to Istvan's home via the Channel tunnel, then the next day we went on to Hungary. Of course, there were no car hire charges and we could go anywhere we wanted to. The airfares price rise doesn't surprise me. Regards, Charlie

Although Riders isn't a typical EF86 type of recording, because late 70's a EF86 valve/tube wasn't around in the recording studio with The Shads... It has a good sound, although a little distorted. Was the amp hard driven by the EF86 or the EF86 by the hard-hitting by Gabor's playing?
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, I was hoping someone would notice the little extra distortion. This is probably mostly due to the emulation of the earlier EF86 circuit (driven by the guitar), which was much more non linear than the 1960 circuit. Distortion could also have come from the power amp emulation in the new preamp, but I'm not sure if the guitar was driving it hard enough at that time. It is also possible the AC30CC2X normal channel input was slightly overdriven. You are right that Hank wouldn't have been using an EF86 based amp in the 70s, however, he did use the EF86 channel of his Matchless for the clean sound on some tours. This made me realise that trying the EF86 sound for modern Hank sounds could work quite well. Regards, Charlie

Yeah Charlie a few people are driving from Melbourne to Perth this weekend a very long way it’s the equivalent to driving across Western Europe Matthew

Hi Charlie, That Hank is a clever chap indeed I'm using the EF86 channel on my DC30 also for 99% of the time because I rarely use a distortion sound. Perhaps Gabor's sounds is a little distorted because of the two pre-amps in the signal chain? Is the EF86 project capable to produce a clean sound? Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, The 1960 Vox EF86 circuit is more like the Matchless EF86 circuit and a bit cleaner than the 1959 circuit. However, the 1960 EF86 normal setting has more bass than the 1959 circuit and the 1960 brilliant setting has much less bass. Regards, Charlie

Hi Gabor, Good to hear these! If I remember correctly the setting for both was the 1960 EF86 sound on the brilliance setting and with the tone control (actually a cut control wired backwards!) turned low to reduce treble. Regards, Charlie
