I have not heard Apache played on a Burns before. Slightly complessed sound. I have to say I prefer the Stratocaster sound. Any other views? 1964 youtu.be/ZvIYaYvVImcGeorge

Perhaps a different way of thinking, Hank sounds more like his modern sound in that clip. Regards, Charlie

Agree but to be fair, we are reliant on the sound of the broadcast, I would hazard a guess that the sound would have been 50% better had we be sat in the audience😆👍

George, I agree the I think the a Fender has a fatter more rounded, fuller sound. This video has been up before here, to be fair, the live recorded sound doesn’t help, Im sure it would have been a more pleasing sound if one was there in the audience. Personally, I think the Burns had its place in the mid to late 60s, Fitting in to the beat music sound Merseyside etc. Peter

Hello George,
sadly I haven't got sound / tone sensitive ears like charlie, but having listened to this clip and an earlier clip of Hank with a Strat, you know what, for a change, even I could discern a difference between the two instruments as I went from one recording to the other listening to the same phrase.
In this instance, to me, the Burns had a slightly nasal tone. Not better or worse than the Strat, just slightly different.
So, I'll keep my Strats and my Burns guitars and enjoy the sounds they make, they are both great characters.
Cheers
Mick

hi shadfans ,been readingposts on here about hanks modern sound etc etc. now I have to say that in my opinion apache needs to be played on a strat with a bit of attitude ,just like the original was .plummy sounding strats and burns marvins just don't do justice to the old type of shads numbers . hanky used to play with a bit of aggression which is sadly lacking for a long time.i know he didn't want to stay in 1961 but that type of sound is the real shadows sound for a lot of us, not some of the musical wallpaper covers.

I can't see a lead from guitar(s) to amp(s). Methinks that might mess up the sound a little . I believe that the first radio system was the Schaffer–Vega diversity system from the mid 70's but I stand to be corrected. Regards, Darryl

I remember that bo winberg played wireless in the early sixties. But I guess it was no commercial gear but build by himself. It is well documented that he interfered the paris police radio while playing the olympia in 1963!

Hi Darryl,
There are leads present for sure, you can see the one from Hank and if you look close, when he lift the Burns you can see a plug. I've seen this live show many times, it's nearly a half hour and then after the intermission one with Cliff for about the same length.
Cheers Rob

Thanks for the clip, and the stratocaster would sound better IMHO. Refreshing to say that the clip appears 100% live, and I note with interest the way Hank plays the middle 8 muted section as I have seen most other players do it. But on the record, some magic happens where the echo adds another virtual note (as within W Land). Thank you.
