Hi Les
As a starting point try it with the bass, middle and treble knobs knobs at 12 o'clock, the drive at 9 o'clock or a little less (any higher and the sound will start to distort) and the level knob to suit your H&C. Note that the 'Voice' knob thickens up the sound as you turn it clockwise and I've found that the 12 o'clock position is good for the Hank modern sound.
These settings should give you the ball park basic sound you're looking for and you can then adjust it by making small alterations to any of or all the knobs.
Good luck!
Tony

As the AC Tone is an Amp sim shouldn't it come after the echo? I know it can be used either way round, so it might be worth trying it both ways.

Hi Baz
I know that's the theory but I've tried it both ways and I can't hear any difference. Also in theory, you don't need to use it with an amp either but I do (with the amp flat) and it works fine.
Cheers.
Tony

Hi Tony,
I suggested try both ways in case there was any problems with whatever setup He was using. Yes I also use it with an Amp set on flat.

Hi Les, The Joyo AC Tone (JF-13) is a clone of the "Liverpool" from the Tech21 Character Series. The layout of the knobs on the front panel has been altered and the "Character" knob has been relabelled as "Voice" but otherwise everything is the same as for The Liverpool. www.tech21nyc.com/t21manuals/CharacSeries-OMsettings_LV.pdfThe "Voice" knob controls the simulation of various incarnations of the Vox AC15/30: from fully anticlockwise to fully clockwise it moves through "EF86", Normal, Brilliant, Top-Boost and Treble-boosted Brian May. The "Drive" knob then introduces varying degrees of boost/overdrive/distortion. The tone controls are critical for emulating Hank's evolving sound. For example, for the early EF86 recordings you would have "Low" (i.e. Bass) fully anticlockwise. The AC Tone is a complete amp/cabinet simulator and ideally should be fed straight into a full-range acoustic amp or PA/mixing-desk. A guitar amp will add further colouration -- so you are right to set the tone of the guitar amp as flat as possible. The various echo-machine simulators don't just create echo patterns -- they also simulate the preamp(s) in the original echo-machines so, to get the full effect, they really need to be placed before the AC Tone. Regards, DaveC.

Darrell,
No-one has individual track settings for the AC Tone, it depends on too many variables - such as what it's connected to and what guitar you're using. Dave's explanation above is one of the best I've seen. It covers everything, so read it carefully and take it from there.
Cheers,
Len

Darrell, As Len says because of different Amps, guitars, PUPS etc. that people use there isn't a 'one fix fits all'. If it helps this is what I use as a general setting.
For the early sound, (Apache, FBI, kon Tiki, etc.) turn the Bass and Treble fully off and the middle full on. (you might have to increase the treble to suit).
for the middle era sound, (Wonderful Land, Shadoogie, Peacepipe, etc.) As Tony says turn Bass, Middle, Treble to 12 o/clock.
For the later era sound, (Dance on, Foot tapper, Atlantis, etc.) turn the Bass full on, Middle at 9 o/clock and Treble about 1 or 2 o/clock.
Drive about 9 o/clock, Level about 1 o/clock and the Voice between 9 o/clock and 12 o/clock to suit.
This should get you near to where you want, the rest is down to your ears and fine tuning.
Regards, Baz.

You are right Len, DavC ‘s note has certainly given a good insight into the workings of the Joyo AC unit. Of particular interest is his description of how the unit produces various amp sounds at the twist of a knob.
I expect in time someone with access to the various amps will describe how to produce a fairly accurate stick on guide to show just exactly where the knob needs to be set so that the appropriate amp sound can be speedily tuned in to match various Shadows tunes.
Cheers

I've had a lot of practice with my own '64 VOX AC30/6TB and VOX AC15H (EF86 channel), so I must point out that the tone-stack on the real thing is highly interactive -- wiggling the knob marked "Treble" affects a lot more than treble frequencies. It's the same with "Bass" (although the effect is less exaggerated) and there's a "Cut" control as well.
The tone controls of the AC Tone are much more straightforward -- they affect "exactly what it says on the tin" i.e. High, Mid and Low. This means that just transferring settings from the real amp to the AC Tone won't help you -- you'll have to do it by ear. Listen to the original recordings and tweak the AC Tone until it's as close as you can get.
DaveC.
Joe Walsh (Eagles) calls the Tech21 Liverpool his "Secret Weapon". Instead of using it as an amp-simulator he treats it like a boost/overdrive pedal and uses it to create harmonic distortion in the preamps of his various guitar amplifiers. I've no idea what settings he uses!

Thank you to you all for your input i will spend the next week trying out the various settings. For your info if you go on line and put Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Owners Manual they show various settings for the ace tone.
Thank you all for your help
