As you are aware my AC30CC2 has decided to call in sick,I know what it isn't,(thanks to Charlie, details later) but until I can get it to a repairer, I am ampless so all you guys, and a couple of us girls out there, that use amps, what do you suggest I think about purchasing for a replacement till the lockdown has eased enough for me to get it to a repair shop or get it couriered to same as this thing weighs in at 31Kg = 72Lbs and that's a bit to much for me to lift let alone carry.
I need something that will give me a sound similar to a valve Vox ..any suggestions gratefully received, I have been looking at amps on web site's till my eyes went crossed and what's left of my brain has turned to porridge, and I really don't know what to get so anybody with use of anything like that please let me know
I really dont want to spend 100's and 100's as it will be consigned to practice and spare once the Vox gets fixed
Thanks guys and girls
Best wishes
Kay
Stay safe and well

Hi Kay,
The 4 watt Vox amp is a great sound for home use, quite loud with 10 inch speaker, another model also 4 watts has a 12 inch speaker. The Boss Katana 50 watt has a great sound as well even though it is not a valve amp also has a 12 inch speaker, can be set set to 25 watt and lower. Hope this might help.
Regards, Garry.

There are so many options at the moment Kay and all for a bargain price!!
I love the Katana range and use the 50w for gigs and home use etc
But the Vox Adio Air GT is also a very good piece of kit and smaller in size with bluetooth backing track streaming etc
Then there is the Vox AC4 as Garry said above, great little valve amp and nice size but it is just an amp. If thats all you want it do then then id go for one of them
All of the above will give you more than enough volume and the Adio and Katana have the added bonus of plugging in backing tracks and headphones etc if you want silent practice!

Kay,
The Vox AC4 and the Boss Katana are great amps and will give you the sound you want - after a lot of tweaking with the Katana or a good pedal in line to the AC4. If you want to go straight to a Shadows Vox tone you won't go far wrong with a Vox Valvetronix. I can't speak for the more modern ones, but I've got a VT20+ and I can get that sound straight out of the box. I would think you can pick up a good second hand VT20+ or 40+ quite cheaply on the well known auction site.
I've actually got a spare I could lend you but I'm a couple of hundred miles away.
Goos luck,
Len

Thanks so much guys, I can see so far that the AC4 and the Katana seems to be the favoured choice, although I would not expect an fx loop, in the AC4 but I would have done in the Boss which unless my eyes are still crossed and i cant read the info, it does not seem to have,I know i can go straight in via a single lead in a chain, but i do like the send/return better ...........something to think about much appreciated fellas Best wishes Kay

Hi Kay. I have experience of theBoss Katana. If you buy the 100w head amp it has a five inch speaker that you can use at home for practicing. There is a wide choice of speakers and cabinets which you could buy later if you chose to. I really like my Katana head amp and highly recommend it. Dave

Hi Kay,
Take a look at the Yamaha THR10 (or THR10c) modelling amp: the "Crunch" model is based on a Vox AC30 (or Matchless DC30). It gives out 10W (5W +5W stereo), it's easily portable 'cos it's lunchbox sized and it can be battery powered.
You might find one cheap now they've been superseded by the THR10II.

I wouldn't get an AC4 Kay, it's too much hard work to get the tone you want from it. I had to change the speaker and the valves in mine to get anywhere near the sound. What are you using for your echoes? I've got a Zoom G7.1ut and Mk II Katana, and I can plug the G7 straight into a socket on the back which goes straight to the power amp. You can do this as long as your FX unit has a preamp.
Dave's suggestion's also a good one, they're very highly thought of amps. But for what you want I'd look for a second hand Valvetronix. They're cheap and it's easy to get 'the sound'.
Good luck,
Len

Hi Kay,
In answer to your query, the Katana 100w combo does have the effects send and return facility you seek, amongst other things. It really is a good, well thought out, piece of kit with many sounds that does not weigh the earth.
Cheers
Mick

Have to admit I would go with Len’s suggestion of a VT20+ if you can find one. I use one and must admit that once you’re used to dialling in the tone it’s a great amp.

A big thank you to
Dave Andyj47 Dave C Len Mick Tim Thanks for your input guys,I have a lot of thinking to do as in,do i buy a small cheap new amp,or do I buy a larger secondhand amp with all the bits i need bolted on and a possible dubious past, and no guarantee,I really dont want to end up with two dead amps....... I have to do something soon as I don't know how long it will be before i can get the AC30 to the doctor. so its "thinks" time
Oh and this one is for Len.........Echo unit it Alesis Quadraverb i think its a "plus" with Charlies E.F.T.P patches fitted

With a Quadraverb Kay you can't use a Katana the way I do unless you also get a Joyo ACTone. You can get the tone you want from the front but it involves using a computer to set up the EQ. I'm assuming you don't want to spend a fortune on a temporary solution. The latest Valvetronix is a VX15 at £129, or VX50 for about a hundred quid more. I've had great Shadows tones out of the ADVT series, and the VT+ range, there's no reason to think that the VX won't do the same.
The Joyo ACTone is a fantastic piece of kit by the way, you could just use that and your Quadraverb into your DAW and you can get a great sound. I can let you have some great settings for it if you do get one.
Good luck,
Len
