Interesting thoughts on modelers from some boutique amp builders here. I switch back and forward between both too youtu.be/Y_PoNC1FXZkMatthew

I’ve been using plugins for many years, but have used pretty much an all plugin setup for about 2 years now and would agree with much of whats been said, including those who recognise that certain modellers have become a lot more sophisticated. When trying to draw a direct comparison, there is a different logic to things like Helix type modelling pedals and amp plugins, they require a little more knowledge and understanding to setup it up properly before making the comparisons. Rhett Shull also does an extremely good video illustrating this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J02heFTwEXYI have found my way to much of this by trial and error, but there one or two things that he covers that I’m gong to look into! Something that does have relative importance is the dynamic nature of amp and response, I’m grateful to Charlie for giving me a heads up on this a couple of months back, to be honest at the time I wasn’t sure how to reply and the thread got lost in the thought process. Then the penny eventually dropped that for about two years I have been using Redwirez mixIR 3 speaker plugin that has a “Z” control to emulate the effect and I had been using it incorrectly thinking it was something else. I should have followed my own advice and delved a little deeper, rather than simply working off intuition. This sort of thing really does make a difference, many people see software/plugins as a cheaper solution, but seeking authenticity often comes at a price. Gary

Hi Ian
I did the above reply before I saw your other post on the Sound Files board giving the explanation for your absence. Glad things are now going OK.
Cheers.

Hi Len
interesting
I take it you leave the MV50 tone control at 12 oclock and let the actone do the modelling?
regards Stan

Hi Len interesting I take it you leave the MV50 tone control at 12 oclock and let the actone do the modelling? regards Stan Sorry Stan I've just deleted that post. I think I was having a senior moment. I've been using the Actone in different situations from my acoustic amp to a Boss Katana, and I got an MV50 for Christmas. It's an MV50 Clean and I tried it but it didn't really need it. I've got two Zoom units with EFTP and they've got the right preamp settings to give me the tone I need. The Katana's a MkII and it's got an input on the back that cuts out the preamp so the Actone's perfect for it. I'm blaming the lockdown for my temporary insanity . Cheers, Len

We shouldn't forget that pedals such as the Actone are not digital modellers, they are totally analogue. I was using another similar pedal, a Joyo American Sound connected direct to the desk for gigs, until the Covid situation arrived. Very happy with the results for what I want it to do. Regards, Charlie

Will give it go regards Stan Stan, It's only on the MkII Stan, and the socket on the back says 'Power amp in'. It's a strange situation, the Actone alone makes no sound but when I connect it to my Zoom G7.1ut it works well, and the sound's excellent. Len

Hi Len
I have a mark II head which I connect to an alnico gold, odd that you need to connect via a zoom

I have been using modelling amps for a while now and also have an Acetone which I have used through the PA. The Katana is not really a modelling amp from what I understand, but I have a 100 watt Katana and it does a great job. A little while back I ran a LINE6 HX Stomp with a Vox amp preamp along with eq and compression blocks set up in the HX. I used a Blue Baby echo into HX then took HX output into the return jack of a Katana 100 and recorded Wonderful Land on my phone. I also tried it on my Laney L5 Studio head with celestion blue. Heres the links shoukd you wish to hear them. By going into the return jack of the send/return loop, you bypass the amps preamp altogether, and substitute the HX selected preamp instead. I did not use speaker emulation. KatanaLaney

Katana is hybrid Digital/ analog amp analog power amp class A B Like a tube amp, solid state amps are class D . I’ve experimented with the Vox amp model on my Boss GT 100 into the power amp of my AC 30 and the sound is very similar, where as if I run it into the power amp of another amp or monitors its a a lot different, I think the power amp and speakers how the affect the tone gets overlooked Matthew
