Q1 I’ve just seen the video of Justin Daish playing Going Home which was part of his lockdown series. Looking at his pedal board I see that he has a pedal which I think is an old Tube Screamer. My question is surely this pedal is not used for any Hank/Shadows song. If so which songs and does anyone know the reason for it. I suppose that it’s placed on the board for nothing to do with the Shadows but songs relating to other groups.
Q2 I have just bought a Boss Katana 100 Mkii single 12”. Starting to look a little deeper into it I see there is Global EQ and individual patch EQ. For Shadows purposes I use the 10 band Eq as in the Caline threads. However how should I set the Global Eq? If any other owners have any advice I would be grateful.
Thank you all Steve

Hi Steve, In answer to question 1, this might might be of interest: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ8UMHODKuUThis is something he goes through on several videos to get what he described in one as "glassy" tone which is pretty clean. Regards Gary

I’m sure I read an interview with Hank where he mentioned using a Tube Screamer. I think it’s more to do with his solo stuff rather than Shadows stuff.

Thanks Gary,
I will look at this video later this evening. A tube screamer seems tonally out of place in relation to Hanks clean sound.
Thanks Steve

Ii believe Justin actually would use it for other tunes, rather than Shadows. I know he has been using the ACTone pedal on his board which is capable of adding more gain if needed. Saturation might be a better thing though for Shadows tones, used sparingly.

Hi Steve, I did know Justin quite well, although he experimented with other pedals, in fact one that I introduced him to, to the best of my knowledge he never used a tube screamer on any Shadows numbers. He had opened up his repertoire to include more varied numbers at some shows and gigs, but I think it more likely that he uses his (it looks like tube screamer) in the way described above. Hi Steve.
I meant to make it clear that the above videos are intended to demonstrate that some pedals can be used in ways to create different effects from what we would normally associate them with!

Hi Gary,
I’ve checked out the videos and was surprised by the content. You think you know how a pedal will re act then when you try one out it changes your way of thinking.
I’ve had a Joyo vintage overdrive pedal never used lying around for a couple of years. As an experiment I connected this into my board, set the Drive to 0, Vol to 9 and the Tone to suit and the surprising thing is it thins out the sounds but still keeps things very, very clean.
Thanks for all your help.
Steve

Hi Steve, I also believe that some great tones can be achieved with a minimalist approach, to quote Rufus “I used the Copicat for this one, the trusty old '64 Vox AC10 Twin and of course my faithful red Strat”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQiAjap6-eII'll let you be the judge! Regards Gary

Wow, a beautiful tune and very well played. I admit I’d never heard this song before watching the link you supplied. If you can get a tone like that with your equipment then I’d keep hold of it come what may. Reading the description posted with the video reminds me of happy memories as I used to live 20 miles away from Bognor in Gosport before I moved toSouth wales. I bought my first Shadows record also in that area I bought “Rocking with Curly Leads” from just down the road in Selsey when I was working at Pontins Broadreeds as a bluecoat. Good times.
I will get hold of the album you mentioned and have a good listen to it.
Regards Steve

Hi Steve, I don't recall mentioning an album? I lived in West Sussex too for many years before retiring to Devon, it's been a long while since I've been back and I bet it's changed a lot! The desirable vintage echoes that Rufus has is amazing, he is very accomplished and plays quite a few Shadows numbers, if you are interested the is YT video page: www.youtube.com/channel/UCaCOaxECKoPGBLj8LCA6EEw/videosRegards Gary

Gary,
You didn’t mention a album in your posting but the YouTube video states it’s from the Life in the Jungle album.
I’ll check out the echos of Rufus tomorrow.
Cheers Steve
