Hi I want to change the existing colour Olympic White which has gone yellow with time, I want to go to a darker colour e.g. lake placid blue, have tried many luthiers in my neck of the woods, but none have the tools spray booths etc ,maybe a garage spray specialist, does alan brason still do this ? cheers colin

Its relatively simple to do yourself and get good results. Preparation is the key--spend time and effort getting that right and it will pay dividends. Use nitrocellulose lacquer properly formatted for spraying guitar bodies--I woudd point you in the direction of Rosko and Frost or Northwest guitars IMO don't use the acrylic car paint sprays --they are very unforgiving and take ages to dry (cure) N/cellulose rattle cans cost around £16 each but if they need to be posted to you postage is very expensive cos they're Hazmat materials. Most colours are available --read up on methods on the 2 sites mentioned --plenty of advice too online --Youtube and Stewmac Follow instructions--Take care and take your time-- you might be well surprised at how good it turns out Not rocket science but its time consuming and meticulous work--practice make perfect!

Yes doing the respray yourself is very doable. I bought tins of guitar paint matched to the correct colour from Northwest Guitars and had very successful results. I have also bought cellouse car paint and let a car body shop spray it on the prepared guitar. They tend to spray on to much and if left to dry naturally does not harden or cure quickly, (I have had experience of the paint feeling dry to touch but was getting the marks of the guitar stand sinking into the paint, and that was from a very well known Guitar shop in London) in fact one instrument sprayed in sonic blue was still soft paint after 7 years ( a good test is to see if you can sink your finger nail in the new paint.
Anyway whatever route you take good luck, take your time and you will get fantastic results and will enjoy the whole experience.

Hi Colin, Alan Brason did a full colour change for me from Chrome red to shoreline gold at a cost roundabout £90 but that was about 8 years ago I know he retired some years back and makes models now instead of guitars I only mention this to give you some sort of cost back then, as of now I have no Idea , I dont know just where you are in the country but there are at least one in Essex in Southend on Sea that do colour changes there is also AIRWURX in Norwich Norfold.......... Check their web but take a look on your search engine you should get someone that will help regards Katie app.box.com/s/imtyue3dw4ywqq9w5fu7xww90mht22xhthis one was a home build i did last January2023 Lake Placid Blue has a very feint metallic to it, the only thing genuine Fender is the Neck, the rest is from many guitar shops, paint from northwest guitars so if you want to have a go just take your time thought you might like to tale a look at the colour Katie

Hi Katie that is just the colour I want , fab, the best option for me is to see if a local auto /car spray company , and have found 2 willing to spray my guitar, and I can get the paint from northwest, I dont have anywhere that I can spray so I just need to choose one of them, going to see on Monday ..... I love your scratch plate , did you get it from northwest, it really compliments the colour PS.as an alternative I could buy a body already sprayed from northwest ... giving it some thought many thanks Colin

Hi Colin, If your going to get a body shop to spray your strat you may need to try Rothco and Frost .com they also do loads and loads of colours in rattle cans, as well as made to your own spec decals for the head stock the pickguard i used was quite dear around £26 as most are around £15, from axes r us it called avalone white pearl but remember I have had mine over a year they may have changes the type and price,
the Body is a strat type from Northwest guitars, but its not shaped exactly the same as a genuine strat the shaved arm rest is a smaller profile and the trem block hole is a little on the tight side you may have to shave a small amount off the inside to get the block to move without sticking of jamming on the top side
other than that the genuine fender neck fits tight and straight
good luck and I would be interested to see how you make out either respray or new build
Regards
katie

I had a full re-fin done on a Burns Legend Custom Deluxe a few years ago. Bow Finishing did the work for me. They handled all aspects of the job: dismantling the guitar, stripping original finish, re-fin, re-assemble, and set up, although they will do as much, or as little as you need. They did a first rate job and I can't fault them - you'd never know it had been re-finished to be honest. You can check out their web site here. Cliff

Hi.... I have done a u-turn on my quest to find a garage/ sprayer to spray my faded Olympic White strat, visited 3 in my local area Yorkshire, they all said yes we can do it , but insisted on the correct paint code for lake placid blue, which wasnt to be found, so that it will spray correctly, and as I found out the paint they use is water based, and wont take too kindly using nitro or poly , so after much debate I am leaving the guitar as is, also the guitar is an American Pro model , which is a dream to play, and I got to thinking would it de-value if I was to sell without the original colour?? who knows, even if I had it resprayed in the same colour it could still make buyers beware ... anyway its been a good exercise, maybe I will get the courage to build my own guitar ... maybe! my thanks to everyone for showing an interest Cheers Colin
