The Fender site refers to these guitars having: 3 Vintage Style Single-Coil Strat® Pickups with Staggered, Alnico Magnet Pole Pieces and Aged Covers
What do they mean by 'vintage style' - are these CS54s or similar or is this just marketing hype for 'bog standard' but with faded covers?

Hi Martyn, I think vintage style probably means they look like vintage pickups ie. the pole pieces, which is all you can see, it doesn't refer to the covers. The construction of the pickup probably isn't very vintage at all, one piece plastic bobbin instead of vulcanised card plates, there may be extra magnets or magnetic screws underneath, wire coating might not be old style formvar coated. Regards, Charlie

I'm not sure if the "Classic series" is the same as my " 50's Classic Player" but that was described as vintage pups and are 57/62's,
Hope that helps
Mike.

The Classic Player guitars are a different breed from the Classic 50 and 60s. The Classic Players have Custom Shop design input and feature USA pickups, 57/62 in the 50s model and CS 69s in the 60s Strat. The pickups in the Classic series are Mexican made vintage style pickups. They are not bad but not as good as the USA pickups. They are not Custom Shop. Confusing I know, but I hope this helps.

I have a Classic Player 50's Strat and I can honestly say it's excellent.
I will admit to having a Professional setup done as soon as I got it but, that applies to all my guitars,it's not worth messing about.
The pickups certainly do sound superb, and I would recommend anyone to try one of these guitars before making your mind up.

I have a Surf Green one and I took the pups out and replaced them with 57/62's. Sounds alot better now.

A classic player is only a little extra in cost than a classic & you get all these extra goodies. I cannot understand why anybody would settle for a classic with inferior pickups.
