Got my hands on a Fender Pro Junior last night. What a great amp, really did not want to give it back For those who haven't had the pleasure it's a 2x ecc83 & el84 combo with 10" speaker in vintage style Tweed or more modern Black cab. On/off, vol & tone it goes from sweet & relaxed at low volumes to a wonderful rock sound with bark & bite and all stations in between, there's no reverb or other nonsense to get in the way of the truly great sounds. I'm now on a selling spree to get one (super champ xd anyone ?) Looked inside & there's a very neat & well spaced pcb with all the components clearly labeled, looks very easy to work on if needed. The price new is around £350 it seems (and worth every penny !) Fender have some really good amps out at the moment with the blues juniors & champs etc... for me it seems hard to think of a better amp at anywhere near the same money. Cheers Dick

Aye Phil Last month ( & indeed up to last night) super champ was king, but, enter the pro junior & faced with a side by side comparison poor old s/champ came in a very long way second. Fickle, ? of course But you really have to hear the pro junior if you can & then you'll understand Dick.

Cheers Dick Hi Dick, Couldn't agree more. I have a 15W Fender Blues Junior - also a terrific personal amp. Great clean sound and powerful punch when needed. Yes, it does have a built in spring reverb unit. I use a modest setting of 2 and use my Boss DD-7 at the end of the effects chain for the rest. Mind you, I did have a few issues with the FBJ at the outset - unacceptable background hiss, audible hum and tube microphony. However, all was resolved by swapping the tubes out for their 'JJ' equivalents and the fitting of (Ti-9) UltraSonic 9 Dampers. Does make you wonder about Fender's quality control when it comes to their choice of valves fitted to their amps. Clearly there is nothing wrong with the circuitry as my experience has confirmed. Regards, Mike

Hi Mike
It's strange the way fender look to save pennies on the valves they fit to these amps. Inside the pro junior there are ribbon cables carrying the signal to the valves etc.. yet they still sound good & even better when the standard valves are swapped out for something better. I found this with the super champ & I also got good results by upgrading the speaker.
Now what can I sell to fund the arrival of a pro junior ?
Dick.

I have it on good authority that the Vox Night Train is very good. This is an amp header and you need a separate speaker. The "good authority" I speak of was also a big Super Champ person but he says the Vox is better. Now the Fender Pro Junior has been thrown into the equation, I'll have to re-assess. The VNT is about £360ish. And like you Dick I am saving hard and selling my Fiesta Red MIM strat to help finance the deal for the new amp.

;D ;D ;D ;D Deal done ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Finally got the Pro Junior last night. Cost a little more than I had hoped, but worth it ! Just itching to get some "mods" done now, feedback switch first then a trawl through the "mod" sites for some ideas. Thinking about a standby switch, it has survived since 1996 (USA model) without one, is it really necessary I wonder ? The Champ XD that I traded in had no standby sw either Ah well, off to play with my new best friend Cheers Dick.

I asked my wife if she thought I was 'fickle' and she said if I removed the last two letters I'd be more accurate . . . not sure what she was getting at . . .
