Hi All,
The last couple of days I have had some problems with my back around the shoulder area from the Fender weight lifting kit (weighs around 8.5lb, made of wood and has strings and things attached ;D). I guess it's from enjoying playing like I haven't done for many a year, and probably sitting in awkward positions near the computer keyboard whilst playing.
I wondered if anyone else gets similar problems and has found any kind of back support which helps.
Thanks for any answers.
Kind regards,
grip

Hi Grip,
Yes, I'm having the same sort of problem. Also getting neck ache by keep looking at my left hand, after something like a 30 year lay off, I'm amazed the fingers still can move around the neck.
I suppose the next thing will be arthritis, getting old(er) is not good at all!!!
The only relief I get is by standing, as oppsed to sitting, but as I'm sure you have, or will, find, that then creates other problems.
Regards
Brian

Hi grip, I have a weak area in my lower back, a few years ago it went twice within a few months, the second time I was off work for 3 weeks, the doctor said it was a bulging disc. By paying attention to simple things like picking things up by bending the knees etc. I have not had a real problem since although it has threatened to return once or twice. I gave up playing bass around that time because of the weight and sold the bass I had. I prefer to play standing up and using a wide lambswool lined shoulder strap to distribute the weight more evenly. I don't think these are very cheap these days though. Regards, Charlie

Also be aware that neck and shoulder pain can be caused by over use of the computer mouse

Hi Brian, It looks like we'll have to suffer in silence , I would much rather be hearing the twang of a Strat. Hi Charlie, I too use a self made strap, wider than most from 2 belts and a slice off our best sheepskin Rug ;D www.4shared.com/file/144377004/1d95cca4/Finished_Front_R.htmlI always try to use correct lifting methods, its not often that I have much lifting to do other than relocating my woodworking machinery. Because of our room constraints standing up is awkward, although I much prefer playing standing up, I was just wondering if anyone has used any sort of back brace and got a good result. Hi Ian, Having spent a large proportion of the last 20 years of my career at a keyboard, I'm sadly only too aware of Repetitive Stress Injuries, eyesight problems etc. The daft thing is that I used to come home and first thing I did was switch on the PC and spend all night on it too. Kind regards, grip

Grip, I've had seven spine ops (football!!! - vertebra out of line, 4 discs completely worn away). Still get some pain at times but not too bad - Surgeon advises plenty of walking. If you walk briskly around half mile each day for a week you'll feel better. Rgds - Clive

Hi Clive,
Thanks for your input. I usually do quite a bit of walking (to the shops and back to get my beer, cigarettes, and fatty foods, to help keep my dodgy heart ticking over ;D), but all last week I was unable to because I had a bad foot .
Kind regards,
grip

hahahahahahaaaa -nodont try hanging from the door -och I did that coming down the stairs one day and strecthed against the overhead stair s- I ended up like quasi for the rest of the day and the pain was worse--
according to the physio I went to its all wear and tear- but you can get relief using the old hot and cold treatment- the bag of peas from the freezer and then a hot towel - and of course the fags /fries and gargle dont help much either -(great tho')
sorry for smiling ----but I dont think any of us get away free-- cheers tommy

Hell Tommy, I did'nt mean swing from the overhead stairs like a chimp! - if you reach up slowly and sensibly hang from the door then it acts like traction. I can only say that it gives me relief, but there again it may not work for others. Rgds - Clive

Hi Grip - hell mate, you're a walking disaster!!! Try hanging from a door architrive for 5 minutes. Rgds - Clive Hi Clive, two weeks ago I wasn't even a walking disaster area through a foot infection I would try hanging from a door architrave, but I'm not sure how to tie a noose, and with my luck, I'd probably rip the architrave and frame from the wall. ;D ;D specky, Will hot fags and cold ale work? Kind regards, grip

Hi Grip I agree with dobroman after a 40 odd year layoff I had very bad pains in my shoulder through looking down at my left hand but it did get better after a while by just changing my sitting position I'm not talking from experience mind you but they say a good massage can work wonders there might be one near your fatty food ,beer and cigarette shop.Joking aside I do hope you get better David

Yes I agree, keeping fit is very important. Every morning as soon as I wake up I do some weight lifting, punch the bag etc. and finally she gets up and makes me a cuppa!!
Best regards, Baz.

My youngest son is an NLP practioner and also a back pain sufferer.
During part of one of his training courses he was told to look up John Sarno on Google. He has now learned to manage his back pain in a far better way than he ever had with hospital and GP visits.
Look for John Sarno on Google.
Cheers Barry

A sure fire cure is to sit on the knee of a buxom wench, her busom supporting the neck area and her warmth relieving the shoulder ache.
Ian
If that fails it's ibuprofen and deep heat.

Look for John Sarno on Google. Barry Hi Barry, He has a very interesting outlook into the causes, I will do a lot more reading on this. Thank you kindly for the pointer. Hi Baz, Oh Dear, I do hope your good lady wasn't looking over your shoulder as you typed that ;D ;D Hi Ian, I think your first method would see me in traction within an hour ;D ;D Kind regards, grip
