Hi All ,especially Charlie,
I note that there a a Q20 for sale on e-bay from 'Patrick' and it says this unit is not programmed with EFTP. Perhaps all our previous problems with this seller have been solved!. To those of you who might not know what I am talking about many of us had problems with the purchase of pirated copies of Charlie's patches on units supplied from this seller.
All the best,
Robert

Hi Robert, Thanks for the heads up. I think he is playing safe by advertising the odd unit without EFTP now and again. Regards, Charlie

Bill, he also has a Q20 and a G2 listed as well but it is no good us all talking about it on here if no one bothers to use the REPORT ITEM button on the listing.
The only way anything will ever get done about sellers like this is to report their items to the well known auction site. Charlie, as the owner of the EFTP programmes should also be shouting very loudly at the well known auction site, pirated copies of his programmes are being sold on their site. They don't know this, we have to keep telling them.
Sorry to keep banging on about this but it is the only way. The sellers won't stop doing it on their own behalf because they feel it is wrong and they are ripping someone off, it just deosn't work that way.
If anyone's not sure how to use the REPORT ITEM button just let me know and I'll go through it on the site. Reporting items to the well known auction site has worked with other stuff such as guitars.
Cheers Barry

Hi Guys again, You are all right. He has got three units for sale with EFTP. When I first saw the Q20 I thought he had seen the light. The annoying thing is that he has lots of good feedback. If he was infringing a patent then it might be easier to do something about it. I suppose all we can do is to try and make people aware of the pirate copies. I know a lot of people who use EFTP are aware of this site and may be forewarned. I am not sure how successful it would be to report to the well known auction site, he might just say that he bought the units pre programmed with EFTP.
Al the best to all,
Robert

Hi Bill and All,
First you need to go the listing that you're not happy with, in this case an echo unit with illegal copies of Charlie's EFTP.
On the R/H side of the page, just below the item location section are three buttons, the REPORT ITEM button is on the far right of these three.
Click on REPORT ITEM button and you'll get the FILE A REPORT page. The first box you need to click on is the REASON FOR REPORT. The reasons can vary depending on the item you're reporting but in the case of Charlie's EFTP click on COUNTERFEITS AND BREACH OF COPYRIGHT. Now go to the DETAILED REASON box and click on OTHER POTENTIAL INFRINGEMENTS, then go to the ADDITIONAL INFORMATION box and click on ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURERS.
This all opens up the final box BRIEF DESCRIPTION (the well known auction site do not make it easy) and type in something like Seller is using pirated copies of the EFTP programme in this item. Then finally click on the SEND REPORT button.
The more people that do this, the sooner we'll all be using genuine copies of EFTP. Believe me, it's not a long as it looks on here.
Cheers Barry

The reason I am reluctant to do anything is because some of the units he buys are genuine, although I suspect these may only amount to one item of each type. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
I only seen your last posting about being reluctant to do anything after reading the reply from Barry but after i sent it Sorry if my report about it is going to cause you a problem but i read in previos postings about pirated copies and after checking mine it has no serial number on it or anything to say that is genuine and as such if i have a problem with it i would have to buy new patches Best Regards Bill

Hi Bill, It certainly won't cause me a problem! You were directly affected by buying a pirated unit, although it is difficult to prove that a different item is also pirated. Regards, Charlie

Hi Again Charlie,While i'm in the writing mood i need some advise.I bought a Q2 from the US and when it arrived i had to get a new power supply [240v] before i could test it.I noticed when i unpacked it that it had what looks like a blue and purple diamond shaped patern on the display screen.I took it in to town to get it checked and was told the screen was damaged. It was very well packed ind i could not see how it could have been damaged in transit it also had a shop price sticker on the front that was half the buy it now price i paid for it.When contacted i wea told it was tesred before packing and had no problems. The left half of the display works and i can see what channel its in but that is all.because i thought it could probably not be programed with new eftp patches i bought a Q20 from the UK,This one is in a VOX style rack and has the Serial number Q36502259 on the Papers that came with it.i cant see the back to well but it has a security sticker on the case.can you tell me from the serial number if it is Genuine. Best regards Bill. And a Merry Chrismas From Australia

Hi Bill, The Q2 screen is cracked, the blue/purple you see is the liquid leaking out. Unless there is a clear reason for the display to have had a direct impact, I'd say it was packed like that. I think you could tell them it must have been faulty when packed. Keep the packing as proof that there was no damage to it. If the seller argues about it, tell him to claim on the insurance and let them tell him it wasn't damaged in transit. Your Q20 is genuine. Watch out for free updates to some of the programs very soon. A Merry Christmas to you and your family. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie.I Sent pics of the damage to them but got no reply so a week later i opend a dispute through Paypal.I just got a reply saying that it was ok when packed but its hard to believe they didnt see the $125.00 price sticker on the front when they checked it,anyway they offered to refund $50. or i could return it for a full refund IFF it was in the same condition as when sent,As i have allready had to buy a new p/supply and with postage both ways coming to $200.00 US i didnt think it was worth sending back as they will say it was not in the same condition as when sent.Is there anywhere i can buy a new diplay pannel for it or is it now jus a paperweight, Best regards Bill.

Hi Bill, I have about 2 display panels left. They are not new but have been repaired with some new backlight LEDs. After that I won't be able to get any more. The backlighting is a little uneven on both but otherwise fine. I am trying to recycle these as much as possible but it won't be possible to recycle yours. On the other hand though, if the backlighting is good on yours, it could come in handy. What is the serial number? Also, if you remove the top lid, you will probably see a board revision letter, A up to E, most likely A or C or E. If it is A or C, it might need a software chip upgrade (I have some) and possibly a modification to the board unless that has already been done. Regards, Charlie

Hi Bill, That is a very early Q2, although the date must be wrong because they didn't make then until 1994, which is probably when yours was made. It would have had a revision A board originally but could have had an exchange board fitted if it ever went back to an Alesis distributor for repair. You can check the software chip as well to see which version is written on it. It is a long chip that plugs into a socket around the middle area of the board and will always have a label on it, hopefully written with the version number. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie.I finaly found time to open the Q2. date on the poard 22.12.93 The board Reads Alesis Corp. pP/N 9-40-1128 REV A. The Chip 2-31-0059 Q2 V1.05 Alesis [SP] 7/6/95 6ADO I am wonering if it is worth repairing and upgrading as it needs the display plus any other mods plus eftp patches.Have you any idea how much it would cost all up. Regards Bill.

Hi Bill, If you email me charliehallATntlworld.com (replacing AT with @) I can send you a pic showing the modification to a revision A board so you can compare with yours to see if that part has already been done. A replacement screen I could do for around £50 and a software chip for £30, plus postage costs. I don't now think it would be worth having your old screen in exchange as it would probably be too difficult to change over the parts due to the way the LCD screen is connected to the board with a clear flexible plastic film. I don't know how much you could get another Q2 for but it seems to me that yours needs more spending on it than is worthwhile if it needs the additional modification too. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,I never got the time to take the pics.I did check the board for mods and it looks like it has never been touched so as it is still working [only half the screen is not working] as per original patches i thought i would just leave it as it is as i have the Quad plus and now the Q20,Also i thought it would be selfish of me to get one of the only two left when there is probably someone out there who needs it far more than i do. Best Regards and a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year to you and your family and all members. p/s being born in Romford essex i still cant get used to the heat at chrismas it just aint the same. Its 8:30 in the evening and the temp is28degs C. [86degs F] Bill.

Hi Bill, Thanks for letting me know. Maybe the Q2 will still be useful as a reverb unit in conjunction with echo from another unit. I was born in Hornchurch, near Romford. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Regards, Charlie
