Hi,
A pal of mine has just bought a Roland Space Echo RE-201. He reckons they are the best thing since the Watkins Copycat. I've not heard him play through it as yet.
Has anyone got one of these - how do you rate them? I believe that they are relatively new to the market. Rgds - Clive

I tried one in the shop I go..could not take it home for more in depth testing..gives a good echo (nothing like a Meazzi).. But I found that to get a good echo..I had to crank the amplifier I used a little bit more than the usual to listen to the echos.. (However, does not beat the Alesis Q2..if you can get one for the same price.) ;D Sheendigs

Hi Clive, Relatively new compared with the older Copicats and Meaazis, I think they came out in the 70s. Very well made but parts are discontinued so have to rely on those who still have the parts. Regards, Charlie

Hi Guys, The Roland RE-20 Space Echo is supposedly the modern reincarnation of the old RE-201 model. I have not tried it myself, but here is a link to the product and reviews: www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/guitar_effects/boss/re-20_space_echo/index.htmlIf anyone has one of these devices, please let us know what you think of it in relation to its ability to recreate the sounds of The Shadows. Regards, James

This seems to be a solid state version of the old RE-201 Space Echo. I havn't heard this model but the old 201 was a very good echo although a bit off the mark for the old Shadows echoes. Hank used the RE-301 for quite a few years and i have one of these. I remember lending it to Charlie when he was constructing the 301 echoes for Hank on the Quad.
For spares and repairs/servicing of all the old Roland tape echoes, contact Phil Delahaye at Delatronics on 01908 314400, Phil is based in Milton Keynes. Phil used to work for Roland UK and there is not much he doesn't know about these machines.
I make tapes for the Roland echo machines, if interested, PM me

Hi guys,
Sorry Charlie, I meant my pal had a new RE-20 not a 201 (I must take more water with it!)
You and James are correct, the 70s model was the 201.
You all may be interested to know that last night I borrowed the new RE-20 and gave it a good bashing for over 2 hours. What an utter waste of time! My Magicstomp/EFTP is a million times better in producing a 'close to Hank' sound.
Boss have unsuccessfully tried to simulate the 201.
Sheendigs/James, stick to what you've got guys!
Peter, sorry to have misled you with the model.
Hoping you all have a happy and restful Christmas. Festive rgds - Clive

I have a friend who has a RE-20 (don't know if he still has it), and I listened to it several times. It's okay to get Hank's sound from the eighties, but not for his early sound. It will not emulate a Meazzi... Didier

Hi Didier,
I could'nt even obtain a decent 80s sound after trying all possible settings - most disappointing, but confirmed to me how good the M/stomp with EFTP is!
Have you much snow in Paris? Rgds - Clive

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback on the Roland RE-20. I was not thinking of buying one, as I am happy with my current echo units, but it is great to have opinions on other units.

James

Hi Guys Another Roland echo machine worth looking for is the old RE-3. This was their first all solid state rack unit echo that replaced the tape echo units. Hank used this on several recordings notably Walking in the air/Snowman and a few others from that period.

The RE-3 was discussed a few weeks ago. It seems that it does not have mutitap echoes like the RE-301 and other similar models so it was decided then that it was doubtful that it was used on The Snowman since there are 2 taps on each of 3 echo sounds applied on that recording, one panned left, one panned centre, and one panned right. Having never seen one, I can't be certain, but this is the information from those who have looked into it. Regards, Charlie
