Yes, thanks for the info regarding new fittings Andy. I only had one of the sites noted before.
Moving on a little, those bright shiny fittings will dull a little as the gold fads and wears over time. This poses the further question: Does anyone know where fittings that are re showing their age can be re-plated? Also would re-plating such fittings devalue an older instrument?
Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick I started work in a plating works whenI left school as a polisher and plater.Gold will never fade or tarnish as far as I know that is why gold is so highly valued. When I was employed the process was that it was nickel plated first then polished then gold plated but only a very thin because of the cost of gold. I would try in Yellow Pages for your nearest plating works.
Kind Regards David. PS I have a bass guitar with gold plated fittings and I have never had to touch them.Hope you find this of some help

Don't forget 'http://www.axesrus.co.uk/' for guitar parts. Pretty good value for money. Re: gold plating - anyone who's ever seen guitar parts knows that the plating wears off quite easily. Yes, gold doesn't tarnish but if it's thin plate it will wear quite rapidly as it is not a hard material. On guitar parts it is generally little more than a vapour coating. On watches is used to be specified in microns. I once has a wristwatch that said "20 microns". I'm pretty sure that a plater would so a better job than the dealer-supplied parts as the gold on them is whisper-thin! Obviously the cost will be greater but don't let anyone kid you than a lot of gold is needed. You're talking microgrammes for a bucket full of parts! Cheers, Lionel

RE GOLD PARTS NEVER USE ANYTHING TO CLEAN THEM EXCEPT BREATHING ON THEM THEN WIPE OVER WITH A VERY VERY SOFT CLOTH. THEN SPRAY A VERY THIN FIM OF WD40 ON CLOTH AND WIPE AWAY, I HAVE A STRAT WITH GOLD FITTINGS 8 YEARS OLD AND THE GOLD PLATE IS STILL IN A1 CONDITION
