The owner of my local music store has told me that he has got two or three Watkins Copicats and I've asked if he would consider selling one. He says that he is currently refurbishing one and would maybe sell for around £300. Is this a good deal? Would it be far superior to my Magicstomp (EFTP) and would it place me closer to 'that sound'? I would appreciate any advice. Rgds - Clive

Hi Clive, the watkins copicat is just an average echo and no way would i splash out £300 for one, your better off staying with your magicstomp.

Fred

Hi Clive, I had two copycats spanning the 60's and the 70's, they did a great job back then because they were fairly cheap compared with the Binsons and Meazzi's etc. they did give you a good repeating echo and that was better than a dry signal through and amp reverb. There was no vari speed so it was limiting to what you got but it was bread and butter back then. They are somewhat noisy in the scheme of things today and ypu could hear the join in the tape pass over the head if you wer'nt very good at splicing so the short answer is NO. On your Vox amp the Magic stomp may compound the brightness of your 1st and 2nd strings on the high notes as it just is like that and you can't EQ it. Sometime ago on Charlie's site (it may have been the old MSN)but someone introduced a capacitor to his MS to tame the brightness down a bit and he said it was successful, I don't know if anyone can remember. Thanks for the advice guys - I don't think I'll take that one further then.
Hi Tony mate - a happy and peaceful 2010 to you and yours. I hope you had a great Christmas. I understand what you say as Charlie has suggested adding a tone control function for the bridge p/up with a 1200pf capacitor. I've told Charlie that I'm going to try it for the sake of a couple of quid or so. Should be interesting. I'll post the outcome on this thread when I've done it for general interest. Cheers - Clive

Hi Clive...
I can answer your question and the answer is... no... it won't, I have a copicat... and it won't give you anything like the shadows sound...

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your input mate - after reading all the comments, I think I'll shelve any idea of buying this and stick to my m/stomp! Rgds - Clive

There's only one good reason to buy a Copicat - NOSTALGIA! They always sounded rubbish and I remember being very unimpressed with one I was thinking of buying back in 1963. It's most dominant sound was the tape splice passing the heads! I expect Charlie will make a patch for your favourite echo unit to simulate the splice-clunk if you ask him nicely!! LOL!!!

I ought to add that I bought a MkII Copicat about 2 years ago - ONLY for the reason I gave! Nostalgia! ;D It's not in working order and I intend to get John Beer to take a look at it one day. Cheers, Lionel

Thanks for your input Lionel.
I'm pleased I asked before considering to purchase! otherwise it sounds as though I would have been very sorry!!!
Being a relatively new boy to all this, I really don't know where I would have been without having joined this proboard and received all the help and advice over the past several months or so.

Hi Oliver, I received a large number of emails from you a few hours ago, a lot of them were the same, so whatever issue you thought you had didn't seem to affect the messages actually being sent. I will answer as soon as possible as I have had computer and email problems myself and still trying to get back to normal. Regards, Charlie
