I have just had my Alesis Quad 2 reprogrammed by Charlie Hall. It is like a different unit. The sounds (to my ears) are just like plugging in to Hanks rig. The timings are spot on, as are the feedback tones and modulations. Very, very authentic and so subtly done that it is really like going back to a Binson or Meazzi without the mechanical problems. The biggest difference is the fine path between warmth and clarity that just seems to work perfectly.
I have tried them out on a Burns Elite and my Strat. Both sound superb with the new program. I think Charlie must have spent hours refining the sounds to get this program sounding so authentic. He has two handmade Strats (absolutely beautiful) that must give him a good start in modifying the tones of the echoes. However I think it is his ears. They looked normal in size and shape, but I think that there must be a touch of Dr. Spock in there somewhere! ;D

Your right Malcolm Charlie spends hours at his computer getting the settings right, a real midnight oil burner, this I know for a fact. Only recently he fitted a 5 point racing harness to his computer chair to stop him falling out when he nods off, ain't that right Charlie ;D ;D ;D Regards John

Hi Malcolm, Thanks for your feedback about the updated echoes. I tested my hearing a few years ago and found I couldn't hear anything above 14KHz. It's probably not any better by now. Hi John, No harness, I go to bed now when I'm tired. The cat stops me from falling out of bed! Regards, Charlie

WELL I have to agree with you ''malcom'' I call the 79-09 patches ''MAGIC'' for all the reason's you have mentioned & ''YES'' charlie-''The-ear's-Hall'' [nick-name-by me] has nothing to do with the size of ear's , IT is his long association with ''SOUND'S'' & the ability to adapt these to ''digital''-unit's as he has proved [ask-hank-for one] & ''IMOP''the Q2 is the best unit available today even if they are many year's old & well out of production!!!! followed by the M/stomp also out of production...this above concern's ''DIGITAL-UNIT"S... CHARLIE ?from the new's of your ''UK''-ICY- condition's ''1-CAT-hardly seem's enough .maybe you should get 1/2 dozen dog's & make it as they say here in ''OZ'' on frosty night's [ie] IT LOOK'S LIKE A 6 DOG-NIGHT TONIGHT AT 2DEG BELOW!!!!!!! speaking OF THE COLD CHARLIE how"s the ''PIE-WARMER-COME-VAN-COMIMING-ALONG? ?? CHEERS ALL barry..

Hi Barry, Your comment about 6 dog night cracked me up! The van was on the road in December, runs really well, but no pie warmer yet, that will have to come later when we have built up funds again. Regards, Charlie

HI CLIVE ,, IT give a more woody &more vintage type sound ,''WARMER'' sound-wise!! , saying that I have also a M/stomp with EFPT & it is great also!!!!!! but the Q2 has the edge over the stomp for ''that-sound'' we are looking for ,,,.. And also I must admit that I am no where a good-enough-player ,But I do have the ear's to pick-the better vintage-sound.& the Q2 has ''IT'',Especially on muted notes .. THE timing's are the same as they should-be ,but the repeat-sound is more authentic to an analog sound[on the Q2.. BUT CLIVE we all have differing ear's & preferences to what we want to hear from our unit's & that is a whole package ,starting from guitar to what comes from our speaker's & how we play & pluck etc [Iam not so good at playing without mistake's mate but getting the sound I have alway's wanted after 4 years or so of experimentation with amp'-strat'-tone-string's digital delay's ,is a dream come true as I am now 70 year's old ,but happy with my sound & this make's for easier learning of tune's for me at least & the Q2 is the best unit I have found after all those year's testing!!! Sorry to ''WAFFLE-ON-SO'' but I will say that my first Q2 ''email'' EFPT was no where near as good as the [FREE UP-DATED- 79-09 patch-set from charlie ,that is free after buying the initial email EFPT], THE ''ECHOM11'' patches are ''magic''... CHEERS ALL ...................barry..

Hi Barry, As you have both pieces of equipment is there any chance you could record some simple short sample sounds using each? I'm not looking for complex guitar playing with backings just identical (if possible) notes perhaps using the bridge pickup so we could compare them side by side, some played normally and others muted as per your observations. I have a Magicstomp and am happy with its sound but curiosity always leaves me wondering about other gear and I'd love to know how the Q2 compares directly with it. Regards, Martyn

HI MARTYN ,, IN the near future I am going to make some recording's of sound's [''see-the project's thread's & my acetone tape-unit] ,I am trying to record onto a cd-recorder as I know-not how to do it on a computer .. once done I will convert-it to mp3 & email it to charlie & the site... IT will only be afew notes etc & no BT.. Just to add there is nothing wrong with a magic/stomp ,a great unit!!as I have 2 of them one with ''ECHO-TAPPER'' & one with charlie's EFPT.. BUT as said above I prefer the Q2..
CHEERS MARTYN & ALL .............barry..
