Hi kipper, cant compare as i dont i dont have a sg or les paul. If you are thinking on buying one the advice i was given when i bought an Epiphone Sheraton a few years back, was the Epiphone Korea made guitar was better than the Indonesia, and last was China . Regards Tony.

Hi Kipper
I was going to buy an Epiphone Les Paul, and I went to the local store and tried one.
I must say I was quite impressed, and the question you need to ask is are the Real Gibsons £1200 better than the Epiphone, answer NO. IMHO
Better than the Epiphone is the Tokai, better build and parts but there just seems something lacking. You really need to try Epiphones in a shop as they differ from one to another.
I am happy with my Tokai, although I don't use it now.

I have the Epihone Les-Paul and have used it on a few posts, As I don't have a real LP I can't compare but the humbuckers perform good enough for me (Last time used on Jigsaw Puzzle Blues). And on Waiting For Rosie posted 25/8/09
The build quality is excellent and give enough of a different sound compared to Strats to make it a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection, if they like other styles of music.
I say go for it..............
Cheers
Mike.

I have an Epi Les Paul Ultra II and after about 10 months I finally finished up with a really nice guitar......................but the journey to get it wasn't so good.
Having agreed a purchase on the phone I went to the dealer to check it out and pick it up and.....it was in fact not in stock but "due in"
About 5 months later when it arrived it could have been a little better. So: check out all the frets carefully, check that none of the plastic parts are cracked, check that when you touch the strings it doesn't sound as though it being earthed and if it does you too will find a loose wire inside, check out the truss rod..... oh you won't do that unless the first fret is lower than the second fret ( yes really!!!!!) and even then you won't cure that with a truss rod adjustment as Epi's Dutch service area tried..... but they did discover the truss rod didn't work!!.............I think that was when they chipped the edge and changed the guitar ......buy plenty of soap..... not for the truss rod, but for your hands because as the original black fret board gets lighter your hands get blacker.....And ten months ....... well if the service area ship if to Italy (read that again LOL ) in error well anything can happen. But I can claim tongue in cheek that my Epi did its first world tour without me!!
All a bit of a laugh but honestly... the guitar is nice and I quite like the sound of the nanomag pickups for accoustic sounds.
I'm fortunate enough to have a Gibson Les Paul Standard - bought second hand for £500 a few years ago. How do they compare? Obviously the USA made quality is better, but £1200 pounds worth? I don't feel so.
Oh..... good luck!! Mick

Hi Peter
With regard to Epiphone. I understand that they are much better now even though crafted in China. As an alternative have a look at the ESP SG style guitars. Nice. They have coil taps on them and also EMG pickups on some models. I would also recommend having a look around for a 2nd hand les paul studio USA made. I am looking at one myself for about £650. not alot more than an epiphone les paul. Or perhaps a new one still under a grand. I dont think anything is going to beat a Les Paul standard, but look at the price!!. Good Luck. George.
