Evening all. I fancy doing a bit of twanging. You guys have got me at it LOL. Played my Strat and Telecaster to death. Not that flush right now but one of these Gretch G5120 guitars is £479 new from GAK. Got to be an orange one.www.gretschguitars.com/gear/index.php?product=G5120&cat1=&cat2=&q=&st=1Any opinons? All greatly received and apprecated. Charlie, probably not as good as yours but will get me rockin' I hope. Thanks George.

Hi George, I have seen these models and read that a number of owners have upraded the pickups to TV Jones. I have not heard any before and after comparisons. Regards, Charlie

Many thanks Charlie TV Jones is not a pickup I have heard about, missed that one somehow. Just looked them up and they seem very good. I will try the model as it is at first and see how it goes. BTW I had a set of seymour duncans fitted 12 years ago to my jap fender strat 1989 model, fantastic sound. The original sound was a bit too thin for me. All my current guitars are Jap. Many thanks for the tip. All the best George.

Hi George
A review in the music mags gives this beauty top marks, for the price and the fact it say's Gretsch on the headstock, you can't go wrong.
TV Jones pickups are the top Gretsch replacement pickups, but try the ones that come with the guitar before changing.
I had a Gretsch 6120 a while ago,Apache - Blue Star etc sound great, and for all round rockabilly tones it has to be Gretsch.
Go try one and let us know how you get on,I don't think you will be disappointed.

All the best and sincere thanks once again.

Hi George
Review in Guitarist Nov 09 page 89 Semi acoustic roundup.
If you type Gretsch 5120 into google search,it gives links to Harmony Central where there are lots of user reviews of this guitar.
Even better,go to YouTube and you get demo's of the guitar you can listen to it and see what you think.
Hope this helps.

Guitarist reveew say's
We Like Authenticity;build quality and tone.
Dislike : Nothing
Comment :If this is anything to go by,the Electromatic range is now a serious affordable alternative to a "real" Gretsch.
It gets better.
Also,I think the model G5122 is the same guitar but with a double cutaway body. You will have to research this.

Hi Alan I'm so tempted as well by the G5120 (Orange of course) as a "dyed in the wool" Duane Eddy fan, but the big problem for me is that I have a DeArmond (Guild) StarfireIV custom ( USA 200 pick ups) that is a double cut similar to the G5122. It's a great guitar but to get a Gretsch it would have to go, but.......... I "WANT" that Gretsch & don't want to part with the DeArmond, but can't have both I suppose a part ex is the answer but the DeArmond is a hard act to follow for playability & there is always the money side as the local guitar shops tend to ask around £550 for these guitars. Anybody got a slolution ? Cheers Dick.

Well,I think I prefer the 5122 double cutaway, but I really can't make up my mind.
As regards buying, you need a 0% finance deal over 9 months,Take it Away do such a thing, 10% deposit balance over 9 monthe no interest, but it's finding a shop that do that and Gretsch.
I would keep the DeArmond as well, and I have seen the Gretsch for £469,depends how badly you want it.He He
Touch of GAS me thinks.

G.A.S ? me ;D Your right of course Alan, both would be very nice however the missus is a bigger problem than the buying price ( you need, HOW MANY !! guitars) Have a look at this from a young band who obviously know a good tune & have the right line up to do it justice www.youtube.com/watch?v=omJNR_qd3wYHow many pairs of shoes does a new guitar cost these days ? Hi Dick The video is great, loved it. I used to have a Wife like that, when She was younger, now all she say's is please yourself. I used to worry about buying stuff, anything, not just guitars, but when it's all over and she looks into the box she will pause and think,"You know I should have let him have that guitar" So why not say it now? ? Seriously,we only live once, and life is too short to worry,if you want it,get it,and think about the consequences later,Oh and if she asks,I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING,OK. Alan He He

Great video. It seems that the 5122 Double cutaway model is only available in black and walnut colours. The 5120 is OK in Orange. Mind you I think the 5122 D C in walnut is really nice. Need to make up my mind. I just fancied Orange. I will try to get a demo on each. (Its like women, I love a redhead, no hair just a red head. lol) Will let you know what I decide. Pity they dont do the 5122 in Orange, would defo go for that. All the best chaps George

Morning Gretsch Fans
I had a look at the the well known auction site offering and to be honest,I think it will go for quite a bit more, considering there are 5 bids in at the moment.
I think I would rather go for a new one.
My 6120 was Walnut and I loved it but I think I would get along a lot better with the double cutaway, problem then would be what to use it on.
Being a Gretsch,It would not be right to use it to play Shads stuff so,what would you play with it,and where are the backing tracks?
Have a nice Weekend.
Alan

Hi all the the well known auction site offering was for anyone on a budget i think it will go higher but not as much as the retail price .
I myself have had nearly every popular guitar you can think of and have always went back to my strat so now i just dont buy anything other than fender . I have a burns and hardly play it but i love the look of it i suppose its horses for courses.
You could always use it for duane eddy stuff (the burns gives a good duane eddy sound) and buy or make the backing tracks or country, eddy cochran stuff when i had mine i just couldnt get on with it wouldnt stay in tune even with a pro setup and the feedback could be a problem as well .......
p.s. the auction is nothing to do with me lol all the best gary

Just got The new Del Shannon hits CD. There is a picture of him holding a Gretsch double cutaway guitar , with Bigsby on the front cover. Gives me even more inspiration to get one. Good album too. George.

hi Kenny. I started this thread about these Gretsch guitars. Thanks to the input from you and the other guys I can now buy with confidence. I have decided to go for the 5122 double cutaway (walnut colour) rather than the 5120. Can't wait !! Cheers George...

They are great guitars, the pups that come as stock are said to be somewhere in between paf Gibson pups and filtertrons. The TV Jones pups that have been mentioned are awsome available in various mounts and a used in a few models of Gretsch and used by none other the the legend Brian Setzer. Heres a 5120 that was modded by someone off the gretsch guitar pages: hem.passagen.se/goba666/Gretsch%205120%20-%20total%20makeover.htmScott

Excellent pictures Scott.
I had forgotten that the bridge is not fixed to the body.
For anyone buying a Gretsch please be aware that if you take all the strings off,the bridge will come off as well, then the intonation will be out.
The solution is to change one string at a time, then all is well.

Alan Great minds think alike. I am going for the Walnut (lovely colour) D C model 5122. I just think it will be more versatile than the S C 5120 I will be more comfortable and use it for my jazz and country music aswell as the rockabilly stuff. I will keep you posted. All the best and thanks alot for the advice. really appreciated.!! George.
