Hi all, was wondering what Shadow song did you learn first? Mine and still is is Apache but have now realised that there are a few versions flying around. Wondered if you learnt them all or just chose the easy one ( I am thinking of doing that) Regards Karlo

I can't remember which I learnt first but I know it would have been almost certainly a Shadows tune, maybe Apache or FBI. I can remember doing my first paid gig after I had been playing for 3 months. Regards, Charlie

Hi Karlo,
Like most my first Shadows number was apache, it's probably one of the easiest to start on, as apart from 1 short passage, everything can be played on the first few frets. As to getting the right sound as originally recorded for Apache, I don't know of anyone that has achieved it so far.
Kind regards,
Chris

Can the magic of flight ever be carried by words? I think not.

Hello Karlo, My first Shadows number was FBI. THIS IS TRUE : - My first ever number was Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. Like Charlie I can also remember my first paid gig in 1969. The gig started it was at a private party. I started off playing the opening number Satisfaction with the amp turned up to distort as you do and the singer started singing Jumping Jack Flash. we where paid £1.00 (one pound) for the gig between 4 of us. ;D ;D Those where the days. Pie and Chips in the back of the bands black Bedford van. Cheers George

Wonderful Land for me as well. I tried to avoid doing Apache for as long as possible because EVERY guitarist around was playing it.
When I first started gigging all the local bands would have Apache and Albatross as part of their reperoire, a chance for the guitar player to shine. As I say I did my level best to avoid them as they'd become almost cliches - still are around these parts, really.
The first proper instrumental I made a point of learning in order to include in my set was Sylvia (by Focus).

Hi Guys & gals, Im, Trevor, new member to the site, and what a great site it is,well done to everyone who has contributed to it, anyway, my first shadows tune I learnt was Foot tapper ( talk about thrown in at the deep end ) took me quite a while to learn, but well worth it,next was, man of mystery, then Apache, by the way I belong to a club up here in the north east called, the tyneside shadows guitar club, run by Brian bowman, ( Hank lookie likie ) and Tony arrowsmith, who both do sterling work for the club. alas I have not been able to attend much due to circumstances at home, but I still try and practice when I can. THANKS

Hi Karlo - I actually learned rhythm guitar first - the typical 3 chord wonder, then went onto lead guitar and followed my dads footsteps in learning the shads. My first song was Wonderful Land when I was a little man aged 13. 3 years later in 1984 I took my Strat wish it was to Blackpool on holiday with me, just incase of boredom. Whilst there on the camp, i noticed a talent competition in the club at night so I entered it, and guess what I won. Thank god the live group were shads fans..sad thing was the group never had an echo unit, just lots of reverb...still I thought it was the bees knees for winning. Good Luck Karlo Regards Tony ;D

Hi At the end of the sixties, early seventies I was the lead singer in a band and our repertoire consisted of many of the "Stones" numbers as this was one of my favourite bands alas we never achieved stardom [success] due to the fact and I hate to say it "My voice" although distinctly different was not marketable [lol]. The guitar has always been an instrument that fascinated me and kept me interested to play rhythm at home for the fun of it. I spent more time looking at it than playing it. [I'm sure if it could talk it would say "Jan pick me up I can't play it by myself" In my early 50's [can't believe that I'm that old already] I became serious again as to playing it and I bought my 1st electric guitar. A few years later [now I'm really getting old] I began to play solo (lead) as I was smitten with "The Shadows" virus introduced by a friend Jack Leermakers. Once a week Jack, 2 others and myself would practise at Jack's place in the attic. The transformation from rhythm guitar to solo wasn't easy as I was used to playing just with my 3 fingers and thumb and not with a plectrum. I simply couldn't get used to it let alone using the tremolo arm. Later on I took some lessons from Peer van Dun and he taught me how to play with 4 fingers and a pick. Now I can't play without them. Finally I started using the tremolo but not as it should be as Peter Korving pointed out to me. Thanks to Pete he taught me how to use it correctly. Pete Korving has been my greatest inspiration when it comes to guitar instrumentals! I don't play a lot of Shadow music as there is so much good music to choose from. I prefer the ballads over the up tempo music as I strive to play from the heart as I can do this best with ballads etc to me this is very important. My first Shadows tune was "Blue Sky Blue See Blue Me" followed by "Dance On and The Breeze And I ".Have a listen to my first recording ever: www.4shared.com/audio/BbdjpIwI/Blue_Sky_Blue_See_Blue_Me.htmlRegards Jan
