[glow=red,2,300][/glow][glow=red,2,300][/glow]Hi Charlie and all. When I logged onto proboards just now (13.05) GMT using Mozilla Firefox, my firewall blocked an add on which contained a Trojan exploit virus. I don't know what the add on was, obviously I didn't want to find out. I thought I'd better let everyone know. I didn't have any other web pages open, only proboards. Regards Graham

Hi Graham, Thanks for the warning. I started using Firefox about a week ago and haven't seen anything like what you saw on this site. My security settings in Firefox are set to the defaults, are yours? I am wondering if it has something to do with an ad. As far as I can tell, ads can appear here based on the user's own browsing habits and location. It is likely that an ad appeared that not everyone would get. It is worth checking your cookies if you don't clean them regularly. I use CCleaner (free download) to clean out the ones I don't want, it allows you to specify the cookies you want to be kept so they never get deleted. CCleaner is good for cleaning other files from the computer and can clean the registry too. You do need to be a bit careful about what you allow it to delete though, as it can delete saved passwords, for example. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, my firefox settings are set for default too. I also clear out unwanted cookies daily. About browsing habits, I had just visited a midi site, (could have been Outer Mongolia for all I know). Perhaps I picked up an advertising Cookie from there and it followed me. But, at least Firefox spotted it and blocked it. Regards Graham

Hi Graham, I guess computer experts could throw more light onto the reasons. Good to know that you keep your computer clean. I used to visit Teb Weber's forums but Firefox tells me there has been a Trojan warning in the last 90 days and blocks the forums, seems pretty impressive how quickly it works. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, what really annoys me is the people that write these virus programmes. They are computer wizards and there skills could be put to better use Regards Graham

Hi Graham,
I've just spent most of the afternoon trying to delete a trojan I picked up whilst browsing a proboards site, even though my firewall warned me of an event it still got through (I may have hit the wrong button).
I ran my virus checker and it found and supposedly deleted the threat, however, each time I started my PC it tried to run in a DOS window, but couldn't. Check your PC for a file named "Desktoplayer.exe" it lives in "Program Files\microsoft". after going through the process of deleting it I had to do it all again (properly ).
If you have got it on your system, disable your System Restore - found it the Help and Support button from "start" (don't forget to enable it again after reboot when finished) Find the file above and delete it. There is also a file related to dektoplayer which is calling it up in "Windows\prefetch". Delete this file also, and make sure both are cleared from your recycle bin. Reboot your PC and re-enable system restore from the "Help and support".
I'm ran regedit (dos program started from "run" on the "start button"and deleted 2 registry keys and modified 1 to remove it's path. If you've not used regedit before, be very careful or leave well alone.
Kind regards,
Chris

Thanks for that Chris. As far as I can tell, I haven't picked up anything but I am going to do another full scan before I shut down, with a different virus checker. I hope you get yours sorted. Regards Still Graham

Thanks for all your reports. I am not getting any warnings at all. I am using Firefox and AVG anti-virus. For those who are getting warnings, it might be useful to mention which anti-virus program you have to see if a pattern emerges. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, For those who are getting warnings, it might be useful to mention which anti-virus program you have to see if a pattern emerges. Regards, Charlie I use Avast (free version) antivirus and the standard windows firewall. I browse with Firefox currently. I haven't seen it since, maybe it was an advert and proboards have removed it (it wouldn't be the first time they've had to do that). It may be worth a look on proboards forum to see if it's been happening on any other sites. Kind regards, Chris

I used to use IE8 (still would for sites that don't work well with Firefox) and AVG. I have never had a virus warning that I remember when using Proboards but I do realise that others have. For that reason I think it has to do with adverts that come and go, and variations that may occur in which adverts are seen by different members. Regards, Charlie
