Hi fenderibo, As far as I know the X3 does not have the multitap delays that are necessary, sorry. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Yes i realise its not good for the multitap delays, but im looking for a general Hank tone from the POD, and will add in delay reverb as best i can.
Thanks

Hi fenderibo
A good starting point is to use AC 15 modelling for the early Shads sound and AC30TB for later numbers, try the standard cabs with a Shure 57 mic offset in both cases.
Depending on how you intend to use them, these setting may help as a rough guide from which to start:
Amps:
Drive 23 Bass 18 Mid 50 Treble 56 Presence 30 Channel Volume 57
Plate echo for reverb
Pre-delay 40 Decay 30 Tone 30 Mix 50
Everything is very subjective, so try tweaking these for personal preference.

Excellent thanks Gary, thats what i was looking for a few starting points, i did have a cracking Shads tone but deleted it by mistake...so i will use the settings you suggest and see if i can build a good tone up again. Thanks very much!
If you have any more tips they would be very welcome!

Hi fenderibo I don't know if this will transpose to the X3, but I use a POD2 in front of a QuadGT into a Vox HeritageTV15 and the settings I use are.....
Vox Ac15 AIR mode switched to Amp mode Cab sim in BYPASS.....quite important this one!! Effects set to Compressor....1 notch only (i.e. Effect Tweak set to about 10 to) Drive about 10 to Bass about 10 to Middle full on Treble about 5 past Channel gain full Reverb off (or to taste)
This seems to give me tones very near to the original recordings of Apache, Wonderfull Land etc.
Hope it works for you Regards Syders

Fenderibo
I downloaded a few of those patches really out of interest. I don't use them for Shads stuff as I have a Q2 with Charlies echo's and use the Pod for amp simulation very similar to how Gary described.

Hi everyone There are so many variables and different ideas as to what sounds right, and indeed "That Sound". I try to do fast switching comparisons between the early recorded sounds and my setup on the computer, I even tried using Logic Pro match EQ to analyse and get a better understanding of what is going on, trying to replicate it. I have now moved away from this approach in favour of keeping FX effects to a minimum and focusing on improving my playing style, with exactly the same settings others can make my equipment sound totally different (usually a lot better than me). Central to everything is Charlies EFTP patches, in my case on a MagicStomp, I think that Charlie himself would advocate plate reverb as being something worth adding into the mix. I was surprised to find that the early sound was probably a lot thinner than I originally thought and I have found it interesting playing around with a Gemini III, which provides different levels of active bass roll off. I now run South West Shadows Club, which gives me a privileged opportunity to hear first class players who sound truly wonderful (visit our website at www.southwestshadows.org.uk "Information" pages to see what I mean). These are the people who have natural ability and talent at hearing and defining detail, applying it to all aspects of their playing expertise. Regards Gary

Hi Gary, Reverb can sound good when added to certain tunes. But I do feel that the majority of Shadows tunes have the most effect coming from the echo itself, particularly in the case of Apache. Where reverb can help a lot is to fill in some of the sound when the echo isn't quite right. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie
Thats very interesting, I am always a bit uncertain as I didn't want to add or detract from any effects that you have programmed in with the echos, which is perhaps why I feel I get better results using less added FX now.
I believe I read that they used plate reverb in the studio in the early days, so perhaps wrongly assumed that this was an ingredient in the early sound. I was also using a Home Brew vintage compressor, which I have now taken out the equation.
Do you think less is more and that this is the right way to go?
Best regards
Gary

Hi Gary, I think reverb is more useful for many tunes that used the Echomatic 1, with the Echomatic 2 it has almost a reverb sound of its own. Regards, Charlie

Hi fenderibo,
I've got a selection of Shadows/Marvin sounds for the POD X3, most of which I wrote myself. If you're interested send me an email to demowest(at)gmx.de.
