You can see it lurking just behind Hank at 56 seconds into the clip. I dont think its the original echomatic 1 (as used in Apache) but the second model Hank used with slightly different head spacings. Still a drum unit though, I believe

It sounds like Hank's original Meazzi to me, and definitely not his later Echomatic 2. I don't think anyone is sure exactly which Meazzi model his first one was. Regards, Charlie

Hi Scott, I don't think Hank's first echo was a model J, although it does seem that he has used one. Regards, Charlie

you are quite likely right Charlie. I was looking at the echo unit in the video, its rather tricky tryin to pin point exactly what was used when.

Hi Patrik ,Charlie & Everyone Thanks for posting this version of FBI I also played the video of Shadows FBI on the cracker jack show and Hank Plays the high register part completly different and closer to the recording on that video I think this shows that there are so many different ways hank played numbers that w3 cant be to diffinite as to the right way or the wrong way to play Shadows tunes Cheers John44

Hi, The echo timings on the clip are roughly 123, 431 and 605 mSec and so correspond to the unit used for Apache and other early tunes. This was a 5 head Meazzi (possibly model F?) and as Charlie said above, definitely not the later 4 head unit usually called an Echomatic 2.

Hi,
Notice the Big "BLACK" knob in thee middle of the front of the Meazzi. I had the same model "Drum Meazzi" in the 60's But the Centre "Echo selector " knob was white.I reasd somewhere that Hank changed it for a Black one So he could easily locate this important control under Stage Lighting Conditions. (Unfortunately I don't know if Both Drum Meazzis had the black knobs--however there is a photo ,somewhere on the internet,of Hank ,at the Palladium, with both Meazzis on top of his Amp.
Cheers
Ian

Just popping back to this thread and the Meazzi. These days there are technicians rushing around with mixing tables, banks of amps and hi-tech effects etc. I had to smile at this early Shadows appearance on Crackerjack, where the floorman had provided a dining room chair to sit the Meazzi on ;D ;D ;D www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlDzFeHmO9w&feature=relatedJames.
