Hi Charlie, Just watched the Shads on the "History of the Guitar" TV programme.
Your "Magicstomp" settings recommend the Bridge Pup for "Frightened City"--Hmm--The Middle pickup sounds more like the nearer "Hank " Sound--What do you Think ?
Cheers
Ian (TOMMO)

Hi.
Sorry to interrupt, to day Hank play it on the bridge PU, but the original from February 1961 is made on the middle PU.
Kind Regards, 26rednef

Hi Ian, I have changed my mind about the pickup used for Frightened City. Most of us now agree that the middle pickup sounds closer. Regards, Charlie

If you watch the Crackerjack Vid on Utube it will confirm the PU as the middle one !

Hi,
Taking the lead from a recorded video or film, mimed or live can be totally misleading. Take Peace Pipe for example - played on the original recording on the neck pick-up yet played by Hank on the 2004 Final Tour on the bridge pick-up of all places !! A totally different sound.
I've always taken listings such as those provided by Charlie as a guide - never gospel. I think assessing which pick-up to use to emulate a recorded track, if that is your intention, is best determined by one's own ears !!
Cheers,
Ian

Hi.
Are we sure it is played on a Strat on the original recording ?
I have always played much of The Shadows oldies on a Tele and used the bridge/neck combination it has been the closest I could get to the original sound, my original 1962 Sttrat is not so close in sound on any of its PU's. On my newer Strat guitars I have B/N combination available and it sound very close on tunes like "Nivram","Sleepwalk","Frighten City","Blue Star" and many many others. It could mean that Hank used his Gretsch CG on the originals with B/N PU combination.
But to be honest I don't care at all as long as I like the sound and it sounds genuine.
Kind Regards, 26rednef

Thanks for the Replies gentlemen.
I have noticed that on The Latest Shadows/Cliff DVDs that Hank uses the Bridge pickup for the Majority of Tunes.--Is this because the Pups he uses (Presumably Kinmans) have very versatile Tone adjusting knobs ??

Hi Ian.
Yes you are right the Kinman tone control in Hi-Definition mode, is very useful I have it on my newer strats and it works really good and is what I have searched fore, the standard Fender tone control I don't understand at all, on my old 1962 Strat both has been standing on full since it was new, but on my new Strats it is always in use because it works !

Hi Charlie.
Just a little comment, why it is so hard to hear what PU is used.
Yes, he used the CG on "Nivram" he said on the radio interview.
One more thing, Hank do nearly always have the tremolo in his hand and is therefore picking the strings somewhere over the neck PU, sometimes I think even a bit over the neck and that will give less contents of harmonics in the tone, even that he was picking very hard it will sound different against to pick somewhere over the middle PU. They modulated this much from tune to tune to find the best sound, it can be heard on a studio tape where Bruce is saying keep away from the bridge even more.
If picking the strings so high the sound from the bridge PU can be very close to what a neck PU sounds if picking somewhere between it and the bridge.
Kind Regards, 26rednef

Hi All,
While were on this topic of authenticity, has anyone researched what amp Hank was using on any given recording, and what amp settings were likely?

Hi Dave.
The only report I have seen on that subject is Roberto Pistolesi and Malcolm Addey in the book That Sound and on "Frighten City" they have two amp's that can have been used of Hank, Vox AC30/4 or AC30/6.

Hi 26rednef,
I'm fortunate to own a genuine '64 AC30/6 TB. I also have a POD X3 LIVE, which does a fair job of emulating all the AC models and a Matchless, but I've no idea what tone and presence settings to use.

Hi Dave. I think the only way is to listen and compare and change until it as close you can get and start with every thing set neutral 12 a clock, record and compare, change and record and check again and so on until satisfied. That is what I should do, all of this is a art work made by hand and kind of trial and error. Most error ;D Kind Regards, 26rednef
